Too bad it doesn't do my 3d gaming :(

Or have my spinning, animated, 3d dynamic globe that changes where lights are depending on time of day :(

But the effects rock so much more than Vista!

I'm just gonna hafta dual boot, or use one computer with ubuntu, and one with Vista.

If you are able to Dual boot with Ubunta and Vista let me know how it goes. I tried about 2 months ago before Fiesty Fawn release and I just couldn't get it working. =)

I've had a good time dual booting those two. I think as long as you install Ubuntu second, you should be good to go.

Yup, Ubuntu will pick up the Windows boot loader, and slot itself just infront of it.

And Zellio, Linux does 3D gaming. I play CoD2 and Silent Hunter III on my Linux install.

How good does it do 3d gaming though?

I try to get the quickest, fastest fps I can. Unless it can display fps faster then Xp, or have good reason to be slow like Vista (IE high contrast mode for lcds), I'd rather use windows for 3d gaming honestly.

Although the games that come with linux are quite fun.

yeah I have dual boot, vista ubuntu on my laptop. I used to use FC6. I noticed that wine worked fine, I played steam and wow, however you needed some nice gear to run decent FPS, Cossover office made life easyer in linux and games actually ran better. I got tired of compiling wine with patches, however you have to pay for anything but the beta.

In regards to vista vs XP, there is a slight fps hit, if you have a loaded machine, but I was happy overall, however the amount of ram required for vista is a turn off. I hope more games are developed for linux down the road. Thank god for openGl.

If a game will play in Linux, it'll often run faster under Linux on the same hardware as compared to XP. I have Doom3 on my desktop, and I love it. I can play it at 1680x1050 with all effects and I think 2xAA with my 6600GT. The problem is that many games are a) badly written in the first place (hello, EA) and 2) use DirectX exclusively, which isn't 100% supported on Linux under Wine.

In terms of newer games I have yet to find one, WOW, fear, and others are bogged down by wine, Example

wow on XP/vista FPS on opteron 252, 2gb ram, 7800GTX
60+ with all settings full AA and AF, limited by LCD refreash rate.

On the same machine with FC6 wine striped down.
30-40 fps, hovering more towards mid 30's. This is with OpenGL, or D3D doesnt really mater.

I find that the newer games play fine on wine, however to get those great effects and non-lag play, you need some good gear, no old FX cards or PIII's

I actually found WoW to run faster in WINE (with Ubuntu Dapper) than in XP/Vista. Probably because the WINE devs focused on WoW for a while there.

really, just installed wine last night on my e1705 with 7900GS on 7.04FF,

FPS is between 30-39 and laggy anytime I turn on 7.04FF, 60+ on xp, limited my refreash rate ofcourse. I'll try and do the registy hack, maybee that will help.
If you could shead some light on this Id be very happy.

Well, all I can tell you is that I was using WINE v0.9.29. Then my WoW subscription ran out, and I didn't renew it.
