for those that don't want to use compiz, but need compositing for say, Gnome-do Docky:
Alt F2 >Gconf-editor>Apps>Metacity>General> [] Compositing Manager
FWIW....I didn't know, had always used Compiz....duh on me!![]()

You can also add that compiz icon to your taskbar which allows you to casually switch back and forth.
Switch to metacity to free up some ram/gpu for gaming or high def media. -
or even better remove gnome and install kde 4.3

I use the compiz icon to switch when I'm gaming, but it makes my dock go away? Is there any way to make awn manager work in metacity?
