Well i seem to be having a problem with Ubuntu 8.04 whenever my laptop comes out of suspend/sleep.
I think since I have had ubuntu I have only used the suspend/sleep option 3, maybe 4 times. Out of these attempts, once when it came out of sleep my usb mouse didnt work. I tried taking it out and pluggin back in, still didnt work, so i was forced to do a reboot. Then another time coming out of sleep ubuntu just...froze; gave me flashbacks of windows. Alt ctrl f2, atl ctrl f7, alt ctrl backspace, none of it worked, i was forced to do a hard reboot.
Any ideas whats up?

Linux has always had problems with suspend and hibernate. There's not much you can do unless you could program the kernel (or ACPI?) to work properly with your particular laptop.
-
so i guess i should just avoid it.
as an off note how can you make the laptop hibernate? -
The implementation of ACPI into the Linux kernel hasn't worked out very well. Soon, though, the developers will include kernel mode drivers, which should make the suspend/hibernate functions much smoother and simpler.

Actually, there is something you can do. It is the case that on some hardware at least, getting the laptop to suspend and hibernate is a matter of finding the right configuration of user-settable parameters. It does not require programming skills. Both suspend and hibernate work fine on my Compal IFL90 (aka Sager NP2090) and my wife's Compal JFL92 (aka Sager NP2092), as I've recorded here:
http://lddubeau.com/avaktavyam/linux-on-a-compal-ifl90/
My advice is to Google for your specific laptop model. If that does not work then you have to Google for your chipsets, the GPU being the most likely part to give you trouble.
If you are lucky, getting suspend and hibernate to work is quick but if not, it can require a good deal of work. -
^^^ Thanks! I'll have to work on my IFL90 settings ASAP.
The only problem I am having is that the sound on my Compal doesn't work after suspend/hibernate. -
Modifying alsa-base as specified on my web site is probably going to fix your problem. I've had reports from some people who said they don't need to perform this change but I've always had problems with audio upon resume unless I modified alsa-base.
BTW, a workaround for this specific audio problem is to make sure that no application using audio is running, unload the snd_hda_intel module and then reload it. But that's only a temporary workaround because next time you suspend, you get the same problem. It is also a pain in the posterior because stopping and restarting the software you are using can be difficult. Anyway, modifying alsa-base should do the trick.
(This problem is specific to how the Realtek ALC268 audio chipset is used on the Compals IFL90/JFL92.) -
well it seems that many of you have been able to get your system running again, however, my Gateway laptop is STILL not responding, even after removing the battery and un-plugging the system, forced shutdowns from holding the power button, external monitors, and even slipping in the LiveCD that created the O.S. I run Ubuntu 8.04 on [a former Windows XP OS] Gateway series 3000, amd athlon processor, and unfortunatly freshly installed ATI drivers. I am intrested in the fix for the long term problem, but first I would like to know how to get it to BOOT again so I can actually try something. can anyone help? thanks
