I'm trying sync my home/documents folder with an external HD which is always connected to an old windows desktop residing in a dark corner ;). I select the first of the pair, me/home/documents, then the second of the pair is Unison's dialog to connect to the remote machine asks for either a:

Local folder (which doesn't include the external HD that is always mounted on my desktop. so I have to choose:

    SSH connection or,
    RSH connection or,
    Socket connect and

    then give it the:

    Host Name:
    Directory Name:

the computers name on the Network is VAIO. The external HD's name on the network is VAULT (drive H), and the folder there is named Documents also.

    What DO I do? thanks!

I used Unison for a long time, but it was only on local machines with an external USB hard drive that got moved from machine to machine (not networked). I got larger internal drives, and stopped using it. Unison works between Windows and Linux I think, but it requires one of those three connections you listed. I use SSH for nearly everything, so I would vote for that (fairly easy once you get the hang of it, and encrypted communications). Even on my home LAN, I encrypt communications. Call me paranoid (I am), it's just a good habit to get in to.

Looking at Unison's page, there are instructions on installing SSH on Windows here.

    Disclaimer: I haven't tried this.

I work with networks, and I am almost paranoid enough. It's just me. I have boxen with uptime measured in hundreds of days.

    My motto? Try them all!
