Ok, I have VMware Server installed along with a copy of XP Pro....(and vmware tools)...now, I want to migrate some business programs from my Vista partition over here to Ubuntu...I basically want to shrink down my Vista partition for gaming only, and do everything else over here.

How do I move the programs over and better yet, launch them from the Gnome desktop? Or do I have to install and launch them from within my Virtual XP machine everytime? (that would really blow big time)

This is stupid for you veterans, so please bear with me..

    thanks much!!

i would not recommend running "business" apps with such a config. mission critical stuff should be run in its native environment.

yes, they're just tax programs that I have backed up ...would like to try it. The other stuff are normal programs non critical common programs I have that probably can be replaced by linux programs or run easily in the VM. I've seen others running them in their own windows on Gnome desktop and I'm trying to find out the easiest way to do that. I know one way using 2x application server that's free, but man, you really wanna have to do it....lol

If anyone knows a slap-dash way of doing this, I'm all ears :D

You just answered your own question.

But I don't see what would be the problem in doing so. I run VMware with XP all the time from Ubuntu Linux to sync my phone with Active Sync, and to use some other apps. Is not a burden at all for me.

I'm playing around with 2x applications server now just for the fun (not!) of it....basically you can 'tunnel' applications from the VM to the gnome desktop...it's free, just trying to see how much work is involved (for me, someone who knows what they're doing could do it quickly I think :D

thanks for the reply....I'll check my VM settings, etc....I'm not getting on the net with it though....?

I changed the network card from bridged to NAT and the XP virtual machine connected to the net immediately, XP updated, activated, etc....pretty great software for the price (zero $) But, this 2X Application Server software...curious how that works...'port back if I get it working....thing is, I believe the VM has to be running to use it, so really what's the point? Maybe window management might be easier. dunno yet......anyone?

I don't get it. What did you use? VMWare server? For free? I thought you have to pay for it? What do you have to do, download it, then install XP from your XP CD?

yes, there is a version of VMware server that is free, and once it's installed it will ask you to insert your OS cd in the drive, then go thru a 'virtual machine' install
