Anyone here know if you could use "xp on ubuntu" using vmware/converter? Essentially using ubuntu as the primary os and Xp as a guest at the same time? Thanks.

I am pretty sure you can, but it's been awhile since I messed with Virtual Machines and I'm pretty sure that VMWare works on Linux. Their website has a wealth of information regarding what OS's can be host's or guest's.

I run XP on Gentoo Linux every day, so it's certain that you can run it on Ubuntu. It's taken a bit of debugging, (with the help of people at the VMWare discussion forums), from time to time to sort out networking or performance problems. But from the posts over there, it's not uncommon for Windows on Windows VMWare to have some problems too..

Why would you want XP in a VM?
Windows 2000 is far less bloated, runs faster, and is compatible with all the same applications. Plus, with win2k, you don't have to play all those licensing activation games that you do with XP.

XP runs flawless under VMWare on Ubuntu. I used workstation trial under windows to install my recovery discs to a vmx. Then just copied it over to my Ubuntu partition and use the VMWare player to boot it. No problems with activation. I don't know if a retail version would activate though. You have to ask around for that info.

Open Synaptic> Settings> Repositories
Add this source:
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu feisty-commercial main
Exit Synaptic, open a Terminal, type this,
sudo apt-get update
Then,
sudo apt-get install vmware-server
And you're done. -
VirtualBox is a good option too.

Thanks everyone, I am wondering which version is best for me. I am looking at the following OS and there prices at newegg.
Home - $90
MCE05 - $110
Pro - $140
I only need XP to run under ubuntu for windows only programs. I will not use the internet other than for updates, web design, and programs patches/extension. Which would be the better value? -

That what I was thinking about getting since I only need XP-engine for windows only programs such as Multimedia Fusion 2, Pixia image editor, MS Office 07, paint.net, nero, etc. Will there be any difference between any of the version if I am only using windows to create video games?
I am aware there will be a performance hit (laptop in the sig) by running xp with vmware.
