So i just installed ubuntu on my gateway p-6831FX laptop and i installed the nvidia drivers and all but now this is really weird.

i went to go chose a screen saver and i hear this high pitch electrical noise when i view the high 3d one but the non intensive 3d ones do not produce this sound. i tested and its not from fans or speaker but sounds like its from the gfx card? im really getting worried about it.

Weird. Nothing of the sort before you installed the drivers? How about if you run a visualization for a media player, or use Compiz, etc?

That's strange. I can't claim to know much about the subject, but I would have guessed WOW would have had the same effect.

    Anyone else?

Yeah, once you remove the 2 bucks, the sound will go away.

But seriously, I once had a computer which would emit a humming sound if badly grounded. One way to test for this is to unplug the laptop and see whether the sound stops. Of course, this will be useful only if there is a charged battery in the laptop.

Otherwise, yes, the strange sounds will stop but just because the computer is off. :p

nope it still does it even without a power brick attached. to test i put in a peice of plastic to stop the gpu fan and used the colorfire screensaver. the sound echoed out of the gpu vent. not the speakers or the battery
