New features include OpenGL 3D acceleration for Linux and Solaris guest operating systems.

    http://www.virtualbox.org/

I tested it out with Vista as the host OS, and Ubuntu with Compiz Fusion worked out of the box on my Studio 15 (specs in sig) with pretty decent frame rates.

Note: There is a "regression" with Windows hosts running Windows guests with NAT. They broke DHCP. Oops. So use this in your guest:

    IP: 10.0.2.15
    Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 10.0.2.2
    DNS: 10.0.2.3

    Until they get that fixed.

How do these work ? I currently dual boot between linux and XP. If I install virtuabox on linux; do I need to get hold of an XP cd to create an XP virtual machine ?

Also, if I have a MS virtual machine running on linux, does that provide with better security than runing MS natively ?

you can boot from a cd, or load an iso into the virtual machines cd drive. so if you have an iso, no disk is nieeded.

and well, if you mess up in a virtual machine, it's only the virtual machine file that gets messed up (and you can store different states of it, so you can restore to a pre-messed-up-state :)).

if you mess up on a real os, it can kill all your partitions at worst. so your linux can kill your windows and vise versa. if one is in a virtual machine, that one can't kill the outer system. (except by killing the hdd maybe).

so yes, you enhance the security as you have more encapsulation between the os.

i quite like to try out some new hip linux distros in vms. and then just delete the file and be back to my os. verrrry nice for tryouts :) (or a vm with your work-os-installation, so that you can work from your own machine from everywhere and still are fully work-compliant, or testing the distribution of the new os/app-setup tens of times to see if you fixed the setup-bugs finally).

    play with it, it's fun.

edit: and you can run both os at one time. even on one desktop with virtualbox. so you can have windows-windows and linux-windows behind and in front of each other. reaally fun :)

No as you need DX rendering for that and you can only get DX support with VM Ware not Virtualbox

(I tried to get it to run on both W7 and Vista Business with Virtualbox 2.2 on a Linux host until I read about no support for DX)

I dont have XP isos, I just have the reinstall disc that comes with dell laptops; will that work ? Do I need to also spend hours installing dell drivers for XP ?

it may work if they're not too missconfiguredfordellonly. no, you won't need any dell drivers.

it's a virtual machine. repeat after me 3 times. it's a virtual machine. your windows disk will not, ever, see the dell. it gets installed in another pc. a virtual one, but an own one. with own hardware (virtual one) and own specs.

and this virtual machine will need virtual drivers to work with the virtual hw. but the software normally brings those drivers with itself in form of an iso and some menucommand "install utilities" or similar.
