So tomorrow, I am going to reformat my computer, switching from XP to Vista. Yesterday, I read about Ubuntu and am very interested. My question is, how easy is it to install Ubuntu? Will it be easy for me to find the drivers? Is Ubuntu a good Operating?
-
Installing Ubuntu will take you about 20-30 minutes; it's so easy even I can do it. LOL
You probably won't need to search for drivers. Possibilities are wireless and graphics, though. Unless you've got an ATI card, even installing any graphics drivers you might need shouldn't be too difficult. I'm sure you'll enjoy the setup. -
Yes Ubuntu is easy to install. Head to ubuntuforums.org. While you're at it, I would look up your specific laptop to see if any issues exist. Odds are somebody else has already found a fix for any hardware that may have problems with Ubuntu.

thanks guys... i'm downloading the 64 bit version right now.
-
Congrats! Ubuntu is sweet.
-
I don't know your laptop specs, but you can also go over to www.tuxmobil.org to see if there are any issues - tuxmobile is far more organized than ubuntuforums, so if you have a laptop that is listed there you can see what they did to fix it. The only problem is, it covers all distros - so the person may or may not have used Ubuntu.
-
I'm running a 1720.... yeah I'll be sure to check it out.

I just download ubuntu to my laptop asus c90s,but i couldn't find the turbo gear driver for linux, can anybody will give me advise please...
-
What's turbo gear? I couldn't find any info on Google about it. Anywho, try googling 'turbo gear' and/or 'c90s' with 'driver' and 'ubuntu'
-
Well, got Ubuntu successfully installed. I was surprised at how easy it was to install.
-
I've got now a dual boot Vista 64 / Ubuntu 7.10 64bits on all my systems
i used Envy to install the Nvidia drivers on my XPS, however Envy does not correctly install my ATI driver for my HD2400XT on my desktop.
It loads everything but after the reboot the system still starts in " save graphics mode" i can get a testscreen on 2560 * 1600 while in the save graphics menu, but when booting Gnome it defaults back to VESA -
@Ralphie: for ATI drivers, you're going to have to do it manually, even with Ubuntu, as far as I know. If you need help, I'll try and find the page and info I used to install the drivers for my card. -
I've found that page, but i found pasting 3 pages of commands into a console and recompiling the kernel, a bit too much effort for now. (remember, i come from Vista where you just doubleclick an executeable and if you dont BSOD you're good to go)
I'll just settle till version 8 and Envy NG, if it's not sorted by then i promise i will take the manual route -
Ok, send me a PM if you change your mind.

Huzzah for dmacfour!
-
-
But the partitioning gave me fits.
-
It's working fine so far, except the Wireless won't connect for some odd reason. Plus I'm going to have to figure out how to make the sound work.
-
dmesg
lspci
also, try executing 'alsamixer' and make sure your control mixers are not muted. if not, open your sound preferences and see what it's set to. -
Try your headphone jack and see if you're getting sound there. You may have to do exactly what I did, as you may have the same sound setup. Here's what worked for me:
Enter this in the terminal
-
i'm using the intel wireless n model
-
Oh, well that's better than the Dell one, from what I've heard.
-
-
Yep, did try it, but it wouldn't connect for some reason.
-
Is your network WEP or WPA encrypted? You may have to modify your network settings file if it'e WPA. WEP shouldn't have any problems.
@Pixelot: Dell card is a Broadcom. Atrocious.
-
It's a WEP(128). After I enter the code, it tries to connect, but eventually gives up. It's the right key too, It worked perfect with Vista.
Woot number 400 -
-
where would I find a restricted driver for my wireless? BTW, I got the internet working temporarily with LAN.... messed vista up and can't boot it
-
I don't know that you need a restricted driver for it, since it's not the Broadcom one I have.
-
I did find a linux driver for my model of card, so I'm going to try it tonight.
-
Yeah, I thought there had to be a Linux driver for the Intel card. Let us know how it goes!
-
Cool got it to work... just had to turn the encryption to hex instead of normal. Now I'm working on getting the audio operational.
-
Woot!
Did you see my post above about the audio? -
I did, but it didn't work.... though I did find something that did... now I'm fully functional. thanks for the help guys!
-
Great! What did you do to get it working?
-
I'm not sure... I added the name of my audio controller to some file. What I'm trying to do now is find a dock... I'm not sure how to install one though.
-
Did you follow some instructions somewhere?
-
So is everything working now, dmacfour?
-
It is

w00t w00t w00t w0000000t!!!!!
-
Good job.
Because Ubuntu 8.04 just came out and now you have to reinstall. (upgrading is not recommended)
Well, at least you got some practice in right? -
Lol... I hope dual screens are easier to use in this one
EDIT: that one is just a beta. the final comes out in a month. -
Yes but it is relatively stable and will update to the LTS release. Works much better than 7.1 on my Compal anyway.
