my linux machine...here is what I posted in the DELL Vostro/Precision/Latitude forum:

I got the Vostro 1220 from the outlet today...looks good. Regular true life screen is very bright, and clear.

they gave me two power bricks? what's with that? I'm not complaining

The single center speaker on bottom doesn't make a difference to me because I used headphones or externalsl for music and things that matter. For say, Hulu, all I want is a clear center channel for dialogue...so no worries there for me. It seem very light to me after lugging around a precision m4400everywhere I go.

The unit looks new....only thing that looks slightly preowned is the led panel bove the function keys...very slight little 'character marks' you can see if you tilt it in the right light; rest of laptop and lid looks flawless.the little panel appears to be a separate piece...it's OK as it is and I'm pretty much a perfectionist, but I might call dell for grins and tell them I want a new one.... There is refurb sticker on the bottom on the notebook.

Keyboard is pretty great, no flex and large enough that I adapted right away. Screen at 12 inches is big enough to keep me from going blind with my trifocals.

Very happy with it, Vista Basic and all....battery meter says I'll have around 4 hours with the screen turned up all the way bright.... I'm also using a BT mouse as I type this.

I'd say go for it from the outlet if you want this unit....

I'll answer any questions, but now busy putting Ubuntu 9.10 on it.....I'm leaving a very small Vista Basic partition to facilitate BIOS upgrades, etc.

    oh yeah, seems pretty fast....

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 x64, and everything works OTB....seems every bit as fast as my precision. Moving files now.

    Nice! :D

For my next machine, I'm thinking ThinkPad (Latitudes to pricey), but a smaller Vostro does sound attractive.
