Are they DRM-WMV files (files that need username and password)?

Windows Media Player should be able to play WMV files.

If they still don't play maybe you do not have the proper codecs to play them (such as divx).

    Download a codec & AC3 pack.

By any chance, did you rip those wma files using Windows Media Player? That program has an option to enable DRM in their files. If you have the w32codecs installed, it should run any non-DRMed WMAs no problem.

Well, if you're a noob and don't want to do a lot of work (and assuming the files are DRM free) you should probably just use Automatix2 to download and install all the restricted codecs, including those for DVDs and so forth. Just google Automatix, it should be the first link.

It would be nice to know what distribution you're running by the way.

If you are even daunted by the prospect of installing Automatix2 (which I highly suggest) then just go to Applications > Add/Remove and search for "codec" and install all the gstreamer codecs, and the xine plugins. That should do it. You can do it via synaptic and command line if you are interested.
