Linux/GNU distros change so rapidly its easy to get lost out there with Tux. So I thought I'd ask what distro are you currently using? What do you like about it and what don't you like about it? I know we have some distro-hoppers on here, so I'd like to hear your thoughts. What do you use your Linux laptop/desktop for?
I use Crunchbang 9.04. A bit behind and now I'm at the point where switching is inevitable. I'll be going back to Ubuntu for Lucid soon. I use my laptop for school and some photo stuff. I love the clean, sleek screen, right-click menu and speed of #!. Easy to tweak and therefore also easy to mess-up LOL.

Right now I'm using Linux Mint 8. the main reason I like it I like it because it is easy to set up. I don't particularly dislike anything about it.
Of course when school is over I'll try fedora 13, ubuntu 10.04, and the new Crunchbang 10 whether it's in beta or alpha. -
I'm currently not running anything, beforehand I was running Ubuntu 9.10, I will install Ubuntu back, but when 10.04 comes out.
-
Ubuntu 9.10 going to switch to fedora kde

Arch Linux. Was using x86_64, but it decided to freak out and I moved to i686.
I probably won't change distros anymore. -
Moving to Arch, after a couple of months testing. Have used Kubuntu for years... moving my main system from the desktop to the laptop. Have upgraded it, and am currently bunging on a quick Windows install for when I backup my phone, then I'll have Arch installed alongside it.
-
I'm currently using Linux Mint, but I want to move to something more lightweight, probably Crunchbang.
-
I'm toying around with back track now, i was using slackware for a long time, but I don't have the time to adjust the balls off it every time I (re)install it on a system. I just picked up the intel ultimate-n 6300 and so i'm having a damn hard time getting that to work...i. just. need. more. time.
-
I've been trying to get 10.04 beta 2 working but am not getting any love for my XFX 5850, no video output on boot.
-
btw...using ubuntu 10.04 now cause it's LTS release on my Vostro 1220 laptop with a dual monitor setup...pretty sweet....my faves:
Ubuntu
Fedora
openSuse
Slackware -
The same Arch Linux install for about year and a half.
And it does survive a lot of hacking and dangerous experimenting. -
I've used SUSE, Fedora and Ubuntu and SUSE was my favorite but I'm too used to Ubuntu to go back now. -

My router is a mATX Core 2 Duo-based PC with a dual gigE NIC, attached to an 802.11N wireless router (with the routing turned off) and an 8-port switch) I run Untangle upon it in Open Source mode, which is free as in beer as well (They make their money with professional level support and tools).
Untangle is a debian based distro exclusively for internet gateways, not unlike smoothwall. However, it does SO much more than others I've found to date. It does all the normal routing, NAT, QoS and other normal router stuff way better than a conventional router ever could because its using hardware that simply can't be overwhelmed by home use, unlike an off the shelf Linksys or D-link (especially with original firmware). It can also provide FOSS-based gateway level features like scanning everything that comes across it with ClamAV, AdBlockPlus, AntiSpam, Spyware detection and elimination, Rule-based Firewall and automatic intrusion detection modules and more, web filtering, protocol control and logging, OpenVPN, and all accessible from an easy webUI.
When my previous routers choked on BitTorrent traffic, Untangle doesn't even blink. Check it out for yourself if you're interested at www.untangle.com - The only downside is that you need to build a discrete PC to run it, but you can use hardware that would easily cost little, or even old hardware of your own, all the way back to Pentiums 4s!
My NAS box is a Core 2 Quad mATX PC (2x 1TB WD Greens at current for storage) that runs Arch Linux x64. I chose the latest KDE desktop simply because I wanted as much easy graphical stuff as possible, while Samba was giving me trouble (I didn't want to have to fight to learn Xmonad or Awesome while trying to solve other issues) Currently I have my 2 storage drives broken into 4 partitions, and each of them shared across my network via SAMBA. I'm currently considering rolling over to something more lightweight, but that's the beauty of Arch - anything you want is latest generation and waiting in the repos.
My main rig is a Core i7 1366 heavily overclocked PC that I use for gaming. It is only running Windows 7 at the moment unfortunately, but I just picked up a 750gb WD Black HDD that I plan to use for dual or tri-booting. I'm considering putting Arch x64 in one petition, and Ubuntu 10.04 x64 or perhaps Mint 9 in another so I'll have a Linux-based system that's stable, and one that's bleeding edge.
I'm going to buy a new laptop soon, and be it an Asus U33 Bamboo, Sony Z, or something else I'll likely be running Linux of whatever flavor I can get the laptop to cooperate with. Sadly, Sony has funky graphics support, and Optimus is looking to be a pain. -
Ubuntu 9.10 cant wait for April 29th....lol

Looks like all the Top 10 on Distrowatch are for the most part here. Great responses. I see lots of distro hopping
. I have had some brief stints with Vector, Mint and a couple of others but Ubuntu and Crunchbang have to be my favs so far. Arch is on the to do list.

As for me, I run CentOS / RHEL. I like it and also as dhl linux sysadmin it's also my job - so, in my case hobby&job in one package -
PCLinuxOS 2010 just came out yesterday...might be pretty decent.
-
Running Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop (9.10 had multiple issues). I might upgrade to 10.04 or something, but we'll see how it looks. Jaunty is really solid for me.
My desktop is running Arch, but I still need to install a GUI and get the sound working. -
-
ubuntu 9.10 for the moment..will be upgrading to 10.04 sometime..soon..
-
Currently I have 3 installs though at least one will be gone by the 29th
Fedora 12 / Gnome
openSUSE / KDE
Debian lenny / Gnome -
Personal Notebook: Ubuntu 10.04
USB#1: Mandriva 2010
USB #2: Ubuntu 9.10 -
Debian Lenny, custom kernel and Fluxbox wm.
RIPLinux, non X Windows version for maintenance.
I was using Debian Etch for nearly a year after the release of Lenny, it was only when I saw an announcement that the security support was ending for Etch, that I thought, "Oh, Lenny must have been released, how did I miss that?".
I've got an old, broken Acer laptop, that I occasionally play around with, and that currently has sidux installed on it, but I don't think I'll be using it as a main OS because I prefer Debian Stable.
I've got an even older HP 800CT laptop with 48MB Ram, and that has Puppy Linux installed (an older version), but with so little memory that is painfully slow to run. -
It's Ubuntu week over here.
I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 x64 on my nettop/htpc. I'm dissatisfied with some media playback though...flash and hi def video kind of stinks. I'd like to see how flash 10 works on x86 and if support for hi def video has come along with 10.04.
Ubuntu 10.04 nbr on my netbook. An improvement on 9.10 and more stable than kubuntu nbr...but still a little sluggish and inflexible. L/Ubuntu nbr anyone???
I'm trying Ubuntu 10.04 x64 on my MSI 1651. So far so good. -
I'm currently downloading 10.04, so by the end of the weekend, I will be running Ubuntu 10.04
-
Linux Mint 8, at the moment, for a project. And I might go and get Ubuntu 10.04 as well.
-
Running 10.04 right now,it is great,a worth while switch, some real nice enhancements, the video editor is nice too
-
Kubuntu 9.10 for now. I'll be moving to Ubuntu 10.04 next weekend after finals
-
For those of you running 10.4, is it much better than 9.10? I'm wondering if it's worth the switch.
-
-
Yeah, I wasn't too impressed with 9.10 overall so the upgrade is nice.
What distro are you currently using?
