Do you do anything with linux in your job or is this just a hobby?
I'm a comp sci major thinking of doing linux server administration OR security admin. Something to that effect. I hope to get a linux related job after I graduate. At least that's my optimal future. What about you? Planning on it? Are you currently?

Still just a hobby ATM...
-
I wouldn't call it a hobby. I fiddle a bit with it from time to time, since it's not even near possible for me to use it for work.

proxima_centauri Notebook Consultant
I use Linux as my main OS for school and personal use.
I recently switched into computer science at University and would love to be able to use Linux in a workplace environment. We'll see. -
I use Linux regularly because Windows takes too long to boot (including all those startup apps) and Linux can cover pretty much everything I need for school work.
-
I'm only in Windows to game or do accounting, but I can do the latter in VirtualBox which i've done on another machine. this machine is new so I haven't set it up that way (yet), but I basically want to get to the point where I'm only in windows to launch a game. I'm in windows right now because I'm running corporation extensions that are due on Monday
-
Right now it's a hobby and a learning experience for this old guy.
-
You're not the only old guy around here [looks both ways]

I use Linux just as a hobby and for my personal use. Though I would like to work as a Linux or Unix sysadmin at some point. I have been a programmer for several years and was a sysadmin for a while as well for something other than Linux.
-
What if I use Windows for my hobby and Linux for my work?
-
I may have you beat on age. Are you over 40? 50?
-
I'm in the same boat. Have to use Linux for development at uni, but at home, Dawn of War II only runs on Windows, so my main machine has XP.

Find a new hobby

yep
certainly am......let's just say I'm too young to hang with seniors, and too old to get into trouble anymore (well, just not as often)....
-
Gaming is KEY...I'm booting into Vista in a few to Launch Sins xxx
-
I guess I'm the youngster.
-
Thomas....if you are that young, you're a whiz....but I still can't buy that age...I'm going to lay back and give you a trick question of these days....lol
-
Are you over 50? I am.
-
fifty three years old
-
I'll be 52. , you got me beat. I thought I was the oldest one here. Why don't you intstall Mint on a usb drive and help me solve my problems.
I've been working on Ubuntu for days with no luck enabling desktop effects or proper dvd playback, so I may give my mind a break and torture myself with Mint for a night or two.
-
Lol I was born in 1995, I am the class of 2013 at my high school.
I swear! -
Not by much, just turned 53 LOL....I'm not at home and forget my USB stick...darnit! tried to borrow my son's and he forget his 8 gig stick too...we both haul our laptop bags....right now I'm configuring PCLOS just because I've never used it...but I still think Mint Xfce is da bomb....
but we'll see...
-
I'm gonna trick you on that one day....
what a minute...if you're 13, you aint in high school yet, right?
-
When I was your age, I thought computers were awesome. I even thought the idea of getting a computer related job sounded good. However, I played video games instead of actually learning anything about computers. Now I'm 23, still in college, and just really learning the nitty gritty details of computers. Go figure.
-
When I was Thomas's age, I guess they had computers cause they were putting someone on the moon ...but they were as big as houses....LOL I was playing 'pong' on an old tube TV....
-
I use linux in work and home too, same as windows (occasional home gaming and work support cad apps). Linux for all other things
.
Age.... well experiencing 30+ crisis, when hangovers getting longer and longer
) haha
-
They (hangovers) last three days over forty, and then stay that way...LOL
-
I can't say this enough: Computer science is only tangentially related to Linux or Windows. In fact, any CS program worth its salt should impart to you a considerable amount of knowledge that is not just Linux or Windows specific (except for the systems courses). Also, a server or even a cluster administrator isn't really a great job for a CS major. You won't learn much in a CS program that will be applicable to those jobs.
-
This is true, but you must also realize that jobs want you to have a degree. It mostly doesn't matter what the degree is, just a degree. I also like programming and have it as a backup. I'm taking a lot of elective courses and learning a lot on my own.
-
I use it mainly as a hobby. I've spent days in Linux, so it's not like I can't be productive. I'm just learning.
-
If linux is a hobby for me, then Windows definitely is because I spend more time in Linux
What do you do?
