    Hi,

I have already asked similar questions on the Windows forum and decided to ask Linux users as well.

After spending some time on NB and looking for answers I realised it would be great to have a website where many switch stories are gathered in one place.

I have launched http://switchstories.com and I would like to ask you if you are interested in writing your Linux switch story. With the latest release of Ubuntu many people are wondering if it has chances to fight for a desktop market. I would like to prove that Windows is not the only solution for desktops.

We already have one story - My Mac So Far - A Diary and it covers a switch to MacOS X.

If you are interested in publishing your story, please get in touch using the form: http://switchstories.com/contact/

    Great thanks!

Well, I had downloaded a Puppy Linux some time before, and run it a few times. I did a little browsing in the Linux forums here, and quickly saw that not only did Linux get a lot better than Puppy Linux, but it was also available to me. The Ubuntu LiveCD took a couple days to download, but I got it. It worked fairly well, but I was missing a sound driver. Fortunately, with the help of the forum here, I found it. Also with their help, I got my HD partitioned and Linux installed! :D

And from there, I got my wireless and nVidia cards working, and Compiz Fusion running, my login screen customized (read: hacked) and I'm in business.

After Win98 became a magnet for virus and malware, I installed Xubuntu (back before it was an official branch of Ubuntu) to try to keep my old PIII computer up and running.

Since then, the advances in desktop functions and overall performance have convinced me to stay away from Vista and keep using Linux on my newest hardware.

At first, general curiosity and boredom. Then, after reading all the wonders of Linux and Open Source software in general, and under influence of over watching the Star Wars Original Trilogy, I am now a die hard fan.

I'm with zephyrus17 on this: curiosity mostly. And, keeping up with AV, anti-spyware, anti-this and anti-that . . . I'm too lazy to bother. Also use OSX for pretty much the same reasons. I don't have to be quite so careful about opening emails, or worry quite so much about web sites which might install junk on my machines. I guess sloppy computer use and laziness also were involved in inspiring me to switch.

I was going to reinstall windows, and said what the heck, I'll give Linux a try. Now I use Linux for everything but games.

    Hehe,

I had been using Windows for my whole life. I bought this D630 past July and had Vista home basic on it. While I had configured vista to look just like good-old xp, I simply hated it. I've always felt Vista was a step back in progression. All the "allow this, give permission that" the absence of configuration choices simply made me think micro$soft must believe the average joe is a complete idiot.
So I started reading alot on Linux distros and the open source community and felt it was a more honorable way to discover things "under the hood". I'm also a configuration fanatic, I like having things MY WAY :D

So I tried Xubuntu for 1 month, loved it, and now I'am in the process of configuring Gentoo on my laptop (which is an awesome distro, btw! )
