In Vista it seems that pidgin is more light, but I might be missing something, kopete seems to load faster, but uses more ram.

I only even think about moving away from pidgin is because all of a sudden it has started crashing on me so often...

Im running both these on vista, not linux btw. I just ask in the linux forum because many kopete is mainly a linux app, and it has not even been *officially* been ported to windows as a standalone.

I also considered other alternatives such as digsby and trillian, but we all know those are pretty heavy compared to open source apps like pidgin/kopete.

You shoulld try miranda as well. It needs more customizing to look decent but works great once it's configured.

Mirands is currently consuming about 4.8MB of memory at the moment.

    I agree with melcron.

I have been using Miranda for a past few years and I have to admit it's one of the most versatile open source IM clients. I use it for MSN, google talk (jabber), ICQ and IRC. It's true it takes some time to configure it to your wishes. But it's definitely worth your time. And it supports numerous plugins.

Otherwise, probably whichever one which uses the same toolkits as your desktop environment. If you're using Gnome, you hardly want to use a bunch of QT and KDE libraries for just an IM client. The same goes the other way.

Hm, this is a Linux software forum, Miranda is a windows-only program. ???

He wrote that he will use the IM on Windows Vista, so Miranda based on native Win32 controls will surely fit him better than Kopete or Pidgin. I'm running Miranda on Win2k myself, and I think it's hard to find an IM for Windows that runs more smoothly nowadays...

True, this might have met with better reception in the Windows section, but it seems our linux compatriots are sufficiently versed on the subject of Windows software to give sound advice in this matter. :D

Just wondering, but with 3GB RAM do you really need to worry about RAM usage?
If you are, use xfce or something.

We are not talking about linux. This is a discussion about Vista. ;)

No I dont, but I am particular about what IM program I use becuase I always have my IM programs load on boot - trillian usto take forever, pidgin is quick and nice but it crashes so much.

And sorry for confusing people. Yes, I am talking about running it on Vista. As I said the only reason I posted this in the linux forum was because it was concerning kopete which is a linux only program.

Is there anyway I could *copy* your configuration to give me a base to start off from, as opposed to starting off from stock miranda gui?

Miranda could probably be ported to linux...

I'm gonna guess that the reason why Miranda is so efficient is because it uses native Windows system calls...

That's the truth. Although Miranda is open-source, that wouldn't help with porting it because it relies on Win32 interfaces. I've been wondering myself why there's no Miranda on Linux until I found that out. However, it might run using Wine :D
