What is the desktop environment you favor for Linux (or any *nix). If "other", what are you using. I'm just listing the 3 most popular here (in Alphabetical Order, mind you!)![]()
-
Gnome is all I've used.
-
pixelot on the spot! I've barely got the thread up! lol
-
I don't like KDE, GNOME is good, but still too bloated for my needs. Openbox is what I use these days - plus GNOME/GTK apps.
-
I started out with KDE with Mandrake and Red Hat, but since using Ubuntu I've used Gnome and I like it much better. Maybe once KDE gets to 4.1 it will be better, but I think Gnome is working on a new version too.
-
Right now I'm a KDE Knerd...but I could 'favor' any of the first three depending on what distro I was using.
-
CLI For the Win!!!
-
I was gnome guy at first and didnt like kde except for its apps(amarok)but after I saw a kdemod , I completely converted and became a "Knerd".
-
I can't truly say right now as i haven't tried some of the stuff you guys say converted you into a knerd like kdemod and minikde mint but i'm working on that. So for the time being it is gnome>xfce>kde.
-
I like them all.....
-
I like both KDE and GNOME... although KDE 4 might change that.
-
-
Vista....just kidding. I don't have any because I don't use *nix
-
KDE for sure, though KDE 4 has been disappointing so far. However, its underlying structure seems very promising, so when it's more feature rich, I'll most likely be very satisfied with it. Until then, KDE 3.5.* it is. As for GNOME...well, let's not even go there.

linux = gnome....
I started messing about with opensolaris last week sometime... that is ok as well.
Ubuntu 6 was the first linux os I could recommend... it was really nice. I'm confused on the last version... while a great OS, it does not seem to have any extra features over version 6. Not like going from xp to vista... more like going from version 1.3 to version 1.4.
I mostly use vista.... -
KDE for sure!

As for Linux=GNOME, the whole principle of modularity in Linux is meant to prevent Linux from being tied to a desktop environment like GNOME. You should try out some of the other ones - KDE, XFCE, Fluxbox, etc. before passing judgment on the quality of Linux GUIs. -
They are all good. Ive seen good and bad implications of all of the environments.
Thats why its bad to judge from distros that are focusesd more on just one environment, example judging the kde layout of fedora, a gnome based distro.
I use distros that let me build up from scratch; Arch and Gentoo. Thus I get to customize how my environment looks. There are some kde apps I prefer over gnome's and vice versa. Thats why its also bad to limit yourself to just applications of a certain environment only.
My vote, goes to the more featured environments like KDE and Gnome. This is because with the minimalist ones I don't have easy control over my desktop, sure you can use the cli but when your busy and have other things to attend to then a combo of the cli + gui is the best. -
Very odd... how do you get that from my post?
Far as the other info about the release dates, you are 100% correct. I know how often they release updates/upgrades, but I still was expecting more. I know how the updates/upgrades are numbered, so you can't really go off that... but it seemed this update/upgrade was going to be different.
My expectations were a bit high.. is that passing judgment? Just my personal opinion... not a judgment per say.
But like I said, I do like vista... maybe you did not like that comment? Well, my like for vista did not stop me from recommending and installing ubuntu on several computers last year and this year.
Lots to love in ubuntu for those with slim wallets.... it comes with all the basic programs you need. For some people I know, ubuntu has greatly improved their computer "experience."
And you don't have to be a linux nerd to enjoy it.... -
Somehow, your post seems . . . I don't know, out of place, misguided maybe? This is a thread about Linux and you're discussing Vista and XP, placing Vista in a position with which most Linux users here probably disagree. One of the reasons I, for instance, began using Linux, was that I dislike Vista. I don't think I'm alone in feeling that going from XP to Vista was a downgrade.
Making a comparison of the new Ubuntu with the older versions, and saying it's similar to XP/Vista seems a bit judgmental to me, but I really don't care. If you like Vista, go for it. If you think the older versions are equal to the newer versions of Ubuntu, stay with them. If you're happy with those systems, so be it, but I do understand why another poster might find your view that Linux = Gnome hard to take.
To each his own. -
You guys/gals are a bit sensitive....
Relax a bit, the mention of vista is not the end of the world... nor my Linux = gnome comment... uh, ever thought that I might have got that wrong or not understood the full meaning of what I typed? No, of course not... seems you guys/gals simply want to blast someone for not being 100% for linux.
Sorry to be such a disappointment... I've been happy to to able to recommend and install Ubuntu. I definitely won't recommend anyone come here for help or assistance. lol -
So, oh, well . . .
Thanks for stopping by and sharing. Your little dissertation on Vista has certainly been enlightening and entertaining. Just the sort of information most of us look for in the Linux forums. -
And frankly, I don't really care when people try and compare Vista to "my beloved Linux." I don't give two ****s what OS the guy next to me uses, because I have what I want and am content. -
-
Anyway my first experience with linux was with mandrake and kde, then I tried kubuntu 6.06 but when I tried gnome for the first time I fell immediately in love it seemed so "simple" no uneccesary(to me) cluttering. Now I can't stand kde at all... -
-
I like gnome alot
The initial setup is nice and its very easy to modify and change skins and whatnot
I tried KDE but it was too much like windows for me
made it rather boring =] -
I like KDE the best at the moment. I started from XFCE, moved to GNOME, now using KDEmod. I'll probably switch again soon.
