Yeah, I read that on Digg yesterday. Thank Christ Dell doesn't put this limitation on me.

Gladiator,
Sorry for your troubles, I read this sometime this past week, sigh,
it will likely end up in court. Doesn't matter though, not to MS,
EOL for XP oem is 1-08, EOL for XP period is 09'.
oh s**t, oh dear -
WOW, thats crazy. Whats next, the Vista only battery?
Yet another thing to look for when getting a new PC. But I most likely plan on getting a mac. -

I'd love to help these guys out, if I wasn't afraid of bricking my notebook: http://openbios.info/Welcome_to_OpenBIOS
At least the BIOS I have seems to be pretty cool, and Bizcom even distributes an editing program for it. -
This just made me think of the Windows "Super" key that Lysander referred to in the Beryl thread. And Sideshow. Microsoft is trying to get themselves as embedded into the hardware part of computers as they are in software. It really is a little sad... I want a computer with a Tux Super key!

It gets worse. You just cant get a computer with freedom anymore....

To me this makes sense as we have HP voiding warranties of customer's laptops after they've installed Linux on them. It looks to be a great option for a large manufacture who doesn't want to devote resources into troubleshooting Linux problems and to avoid the issue of people voiding their warranties by not even allowing them to install a different OS other than Windows. I certainty don't agree with limiting a computer's bios to one OS, but then again, one doesn't have to support companies who end up adopting this.

well, the whole HP thing was some overzealous customer "service" rep getting jumpy.
as far as I'm concerned, I don't expect software support from a manufacturer if I install an alternative operating system, but I do expect that if my keyboard starts sticking, they'll replace it.
one interesting thing I heard about Dell's survey regarding Linux use was that as long as there is a tested and certified-to-work version of Linux available, most of the respondents were willing to go through community channels (forums, IRC, etc.) to get support. hopefully that goes through.
What, Now!?
