Windows has business, OS X has media, unix has servers.....But what does linux have?
-
Everything!
-
all of the above, l337ness, hacksorZ lol
seriously speaking I would say freedom of choice. However the average user doesn't use windows for business, osx for media or unix for servers, they use them since each finds one of them to be easy to use and "just works"
Linux has come so far now that it also "just works" -
Servers servers and servers....desktops....and VirtualMachines for Business!! Games, now that what we need a Windows Partition for.....throw in the Blackberry, but they're working on it. You know, one thing I've found out even now after using Redhat and Libranet from 1999-2001 is that many of the linux programs just plain work BETTER than their windows counterparts, weird names not withstanding
-
As far as the type of applications....
-
Linux comes on free discs that are shiny.
-
No sarcasm please, I'm just wondering where(in others opinion) linux apps shine.
-
That wasn't sarcasm. Sarcasm is stating the opposite of an intended meaning especially in order to sneeringly, slyly, jest or mock a person, situation or thing (Wikipedia).
What I did there is called "stupidity". -
At least you admit it lol.
-
It offers a free alternative to just about any program for any other OS, and on top of that it has the best eye candy.
Oh yeah, and it haz h4x0r p0w4h! -
No, as in applications..
OS X has the media community, Windows has the business, unix has the server. -
Linux will take over all of them! :twitcy:
-
Listen to what everyone is saying. Linux has all of them. Dreamlinux and a few other distro's are aimed at media, stuff like Fedora is aimed at businesses, and you can use Linux just fine on a server. Also, Linux can he used for home usage and everything else.
-
OK, I like K3b better than Nero for one program.
-
I get that.......
Just asking peoples opinion. -
also, I like amarok better than itunes
-
I still prefer foobar2k or Winamp, but Rythmbox is definitely right behind, and I haven't tried many others.
-
I can't really compare at the application level because I have not used Windows in years for anything else than games. I've never used OS X apps seriously. (I tried OS X, found that it had bugs. Yes, real bugs, in OS X!!!
Then, I decided it was not worth my while.)
I'm not sure what "unix has servers" is supposed to mean. If Unix has servers, then Linux has servers in spades. -
Currently, the successes of distros like Ubuntu are showing that Linux has entered the desktop market. Thanks to its flexibility, nature, and design (closely based in Unix), Linux is:
- cheap
- fast
- reliable
- relatively maintenance free
- relatively secure (something like 95% of IT professionals report not having come across a Linux virus)
Its flexibility also means that it is not restricted to PCs. Already Linux has been used on PDAs and cell phones. -
Here's a quick history of Unix and Linux....Unix goes back to the late 60's, early 70's when development began:

Good read zoid.

Windows doesn't have business. Office has business. Business has Windows because it is the de facto desktop in many major companies - people are used to it.
OS X has media? Not sure I agree. OS X has the typical Apple bubble, where everything is glorious and nothing is wrong at all. It's fashionable, arguably nicer than Windows, and you get what most people think is sexy hardware.
Unix has servers? Well, it did(still does, but most of it is now *nix and *bsd). Linux is about the best webserver going, for many users( Apache is the most popular webserver, and is typically ran under *nix/*bsd). It is lightweight(have a google around for just how much throughput a simple Linux box with Apache can do), very versatile(so, what do you want today? A mail server? A database? DNS? IRC? Or, all of them on the same box for no money?), extremely stable and secure, costs range from nothing and upwards, and you know it'll be supported for a long time to come.
You'll find a heap of answers from Google - look at how many routers are running Linux. Or TV set-top boxes, cellphones, media jukeboxes. Linux is everywhere, in varying states.

Its fast, and you can tweak it to no end!
-
another for me, as I'm torrenting SymphonyOne 2008.1. I like Ktorrent better than uTorrent, although uTorrent will install easy with Wine, just isn't the same.
-
It's taking over the world!!!!
(And I like it that way).
-
-
LOL so true. Big brother Linux is watching you.
-
I'm happy, I just got a few people in my hall interested in using Ubuntu.
-
It's free.
-
It's 100% your.
You can modify it at any level, without any need for "reverse enginner" (hello windows hackers, cof cof) - and legal issues...
You can install EXACTLY what YOU want, not what others (Microsoft, Apple) think you need.
You can optimize it for your machine, compiling almost EVERYTHING to take full advantage of your extremely expensive new cpu with gold connectors and diamond clocks.
Man, some dist (Arch, Slack, Gentoo) are really, really REALLLY fast. I mean, XP is like a turtle next to then.
Well, plus to all the benefits, when you see those woobling effects in compiz, you will want to eat the monitor. Seriously. -

Well put hombre !
Where does Linux shine?
