I've jsut bought Sony FE790 with Core 2 Duo and I was wondering which Linux distros support 64 bit Core2Duo...
I've used Ubuntu and I like it, but it has 64 bit versions for AMD and some Intel version but there is no specific version for Core 2 Duo... so which one will work with that???
Also, which one is the best for Sony laptops?
I'd prefer to use Ubuntu or Redhat based distro like CentOS or Fedora...

AMD64 distros still work on the Core 2 Duo. It's just that it used AMD was the first company to have widely implemented 64-bit processors, so people started saying AMD64 instead of x64.
That being said, I would suggest you just stick with a 32-bit OS. 64-bit Operating Systems just aren't at the level of the good ole 32-bit Operating Systems right now. -
notebook_ftw is right, I mucked around with 64 about a month ago on a friend's Compaq. Getting thing like Java going is just way too unstable and time consuming to recommend it just yet. But it is coming along.

ok, thats a good idea. I guess i'll stick to Ubuntu or CentOS...

agreed un less you have a VERY specific need for 64 bit OS there is no good reason.

Is there any performance difference between using 32 bits and 64 bits?
Thanks. -
theoretically yes... twice as many bits per clock cycle being processed.
the problem as others have stated is that support is still buggy, particularly with closed-source stuff -
I will need to run some intensive maths computations (C program) and maple (requires java). Do you I will benefit from 64 bits, or shall I stick with 32 bits?
Thanks. -
