    I've got a HP NX6125 with AMD's ML-32 Turion and I'm wondering which distro of linux to install. Specifically I'm worried about the support of AMD's PowerNow! thing and other powersaving features would be lost? Any Linux people here to give advice on this one? And what other things might I have difficulty with...

    :confused:

    thx

    even if for now some features will get disabled, don't give it too much thought, because updates come as we speak. I would highly suggest gentoo. Check in http://packages.gentoo.org for specific packages you will likely need

    I am running (K)Ubuntu on my Turion, and all Powernow features work just fine.

    most popular distros have a x86-64/amd64 install cd.
    while you can technically run fedora core 64 on an amd64, the best thing to do is use gentoo.

    Now im not just saying this as i use gentoo or that im a gentoo fan boy. The reason is that most distros are binary. Meaning when you install an application it is already precompiled.

    Now thats where the problem might lie. When these packages are compiled they are
    a) Compiled for a very generic cpu base. like i586, or i686.
    b) Compiled with minimal cpu extensions. This is done to make the package more adaptable with other cpus.

    In gentoo you compile a package specifically for your system, which in the amd64 case is awesome. Also you can make use of the amd64 instructinos in your compilations which would make everything much much faster than any other distro.

    I'm new to Linux and I am looking at installing gentoo on my compaq v2000z (Turion ML-37) How long will this take? I don't have a lot of time right now to mess with this and I read in one of the forums that this could take three days!!
    Also would a version of Linux that runs of a cd work well? If so which one would you recomend?

    If you want gentoo but are new to linux, try Kororaa Linux.

    It is a binary, automated installation of Gentoo. Get Kororaa Beta2-r1 with the KDE/Gnome Package cd.

    Install will take about 2hrs which will result in a fully working Gentoo Desktop w/ automounting, all the applications you need.

    Check out Kororaa Website

    I downloaded the kororaa install and gnome package iso files and burned them to cd's.
    At first everything went just like in the install guide on the Kororaa website.
    but when i told it to install the packeg it stated but got a error I check the other window and it looked like it happened when trying to put the kenal on the / partition. :eek:
    I retried the install 4 differnt times fiddling with settings but had no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions? :confused:

    when I was downloading the files the download links on the Korora only downloaded some file that wad 56K and most of the links on the other sites didn't work so I downloaded from the number 4 link (I don't remember which site this was) for the install file and the 2nd link on the gororaa AMD64 package file. :(

    Hmm for newbie, which one is better, Kororaa or UBuntu? I have checked both and I have tried UBuntu..IMO UBuntu is quite easy. I don't try Kororaa yet.

    ubuntu = based on debian
    kororaa = based on gentoo

    gentoo is source based distro with more benefits over debian. debian is binary based distro which has its benefits over source based distros.

    You need to give much more information if you want help. What was the error, precisely? But you'll have better luck asking on a Kororaa board, since more people will know about the specific distribution.

    I'm not positive the recommendation of Kororaa makes sense, btw. Other distributions (particularly Ubuntu) are likely to be easier to install, and do increasingly have AMD64 support. I've never tried either Linux on AMD64 or Kororaa, though.

    I don't remember the exact terminology but the error appeared to happen while the kernals where being put on the / partition (that was the last thing listed before the error occured)

    I am mainly wondering if this could be caused by an incompatibility with my laptop (I have a compaq presario v2000z with a turion) However I am hoping that thier was just an error with the download and I am going to try downloading from a different site.
