1.8 ghz amd semprom
80 GB HDD
rest is unknown
Ubuntu says it reqiures 256mb ram so is it true?
I was thinking xubuntu
P.S. It's a dual boot with windows xp sp2 home edition
and how much should I partion the HDD?

It should work alright. I run xubuntu in a virtual machine with something like 192MB allocated to it on a 2GHz Pentium M, and it's fast enough for browsing and file stuff. Don't expect to run Beryl, though. For partitioning, I'd suggest at least 10GB for Xubuntu, up to about 30, depending on how much you use XP, and what you use it for. With ntfs-3g, you can actually access NTFS (Windows) drives under Linux, so what I do is that I have a shared NTFS drive for media and such, and then a Windows partition and a Linux one.

That 256MB requirement is to run the LiveCD. I've installed Xubuntu on a machine with only 128MB of ram and it ran perfectly fine. If you're looking to install regular Ubuntu on that machine, you should download the Alternate CD and do a text installation.
