Who is Linux only and how did you get there? Trade off Windows for Linux apps, Virtual Machine, etc.
EDIT: I dual boot with Vista so I can run all my strategy games. Without games, I'd be all the way Kubuntu (or some distro of choice)
-
Dual-boot, baby.
-
I would gladly totally ditch windows if Wine had 100% compatibility... Sigh....
-
I almost have.....
-
did for about 5 minutes... then decided, that Zoomtext/JAWS on windows was far better than Orca.
-
wearetheborg Notebook Virtuoso
Does it count if one was brought up pretty much exclusively on Unix/Linux ?
I dual boot now, mostly use windows fora a couple of finance programs from my brokers. -
i had dual boot Ubuntu6LTS/XP on my old machine. Shame, but i'm Vista only right now))) Tempted to kill EISA and use those 10gig to install new Ubuntu =)
-
I long abandon Windows ( I was bored with the system) and went down the road of dual-booting Ubuntu/Vista on the HGL30, to exclusive Ubuntu-D630, and 3E PC's Xandros multi-desktop environment (KDE, Icewm).
Currently, I have setup and configure properly Arch Linux on my m1330 with everything working as it did when I using Ubuntu. There are some audio glitches (the slider is jumpy) and I have not tested/use HDMI or firewire. However, firewire is more than likely to work but HDMI might need to be properly configure. -
-
XP was erased from my last machine just a couple of nights ago. Ubuntu is permanently installed on one desktop, and a couple of others are used to fool with various distros. I've got both Gentoo and Arch partially loaded. Gentoo is dual-booted with Open GEU thanks to you, Zoid.
You probably should have added one other possibility to your choices for the poll: Mac/OSX. My laptops are Macs. LOL -
I use 64-bit Vista on my HP and Ubuntu on my IBM, which serves as my mobile computer. I have gone all-Linux before, but have always been tethered to Windows for certain applications; CAD and gaming.

I'm all Linux, i ditched Windows Vista on May 26 2008, just two days ago. Now i have LinuxMint Elyssa RC2 installed with my /home on a separate partition if i find something else i like more.
-
Seriously though, the only reason I don't drop Windows is for the games. -
-
-
But I bought my Macs before trying Linux, Pix. Besides, unlike Windows, I like OSX. I also like the Macs themselves. To each his own, no?
-
I don't like OSuX. But to each his own, eh?
-
Well, I've never owned a Mac, but I believe I'd probably like it better than Windows just because it's Unix based. Liking something better than Windows isn't necessarily saying much
-
I dunno, I like Windowz.
It's classic. Win 98, DOS games, Solitaire, Explorer, etc. It's just good. But Vista feels more bloated than the good old days...that's why Linux feels so good. -
Well at least the abandoners are abandoning windows during Ubuntu 8.04.
I abandoned Windows xp for ubuntu 6.10. Quickly got all of my pcs vista.
I'm not a kid, I have a life and job so expecting me to spend 4 weeks to program everything... No. -
-
-
The ratio of Linux only to Dual booters is higher initially than I thought it would be. Zellio, I didn't quite understand your post....you said your using Vista for expediency? If so fine, just trying to understand. I'm not a kid either btw.....my kids are though
-
Man I would ditch Windows completely if I could game properly on Linux... wine just doesn't cut it enough for what I play.
-
-
Linux only on my real computers. Unfortunately, Apple make ****ty hardware so my Mac is stuck with Leopard.
-
Dual boot via GRub:
1. Windows Vista Home Premium SP1
2. PC Linux OS 2008 GNOME
I had huge problems finding out which Linux distribution works the best with my notebook. I almost quit. -
Programming at work 7 days a week in the Windows OS. This is how the money is made.
The laptop is dual boot. Only have XP because it is required for C/C++, Java, etc. If the whole world was Linux, I would see perfection. However, all the apps we sell are windows based first and ported to linux last.
Unix/Linux is the closest OS to perfection. Note: Don't get too caught up in the GUI. What Linux is about is behind and supporting of the GUI and about 10 million other things.
Linux yeah!! Windows, boo!
Blessings,

i dual boot with ubuntu and vista. Only reason i haven't completely changed is because I don't know if I need certain windows things for college in the fall, and because I want to make sure that my laptop works fine in linux. I also hate the sound quality in ubuntu compared to windows.
-
I left windows when ubuntu 7.10 was released and I finally had wireless support. I have been linux ever since. At first I distro hopped quite a bit, but these days only two really stay with me: Sidux and Linux Mint.
I was attending school up till this past February when I had to put it on hold temporarily. I never had a problem with using linux. Open Office worked fine with all materials written in MS office.
Now that I have learned how to get all my media to work properly I have no complaints. Rather boring, actually.
Enjoy your Linux. -

well as of tonight, I am windows free. I had to restore my computer, and for some odd reason the restore cd's didn't even work(don't ask me how they don't work) so I was left with one option. fully installing ubuntu. So I did.
-
Sweet. Edit your sig, dude.

Like others, games are the big issue here. But I also get more battery life in Windows (and with my terrible batteries, I need every minute I can get). When plugged in though, Linux is my choice for work and general computing. Nothing works better.
-
i have tried a few times but i just cant seem to get away from XP. my system seems to run better on XP. maybe it is in my head, i dunno.
-
Too bad wine sucks...
But for XP users ..... You can just run it on Linux using VMware if it's not to play games and have enough RAM. Minor hiccups though but very reliable. Never tested Vista under VMware for a good length of time to recommend doing so. -
Whats windows?
Is that the thing every house has?
The only thing I know is penguin! -
I have not used Windows XP since 2003. Linux has done everything I ever need. All my PC's (work and home) run Linux only. I think the only exception is my XBOX360 which is basically Media Center Edition.

The two-finger click usually works pretty well for a middle click on a Mac, and the three-finger should work as well. At least, that's how it works on my Thinkpad here... can't see why it wouldn't work on a Mac.
Anyway, of the 6 or so computers I own, only my personal laptop can boot Windows, and that's only for some games I play with friends. It routinely goes months between booting into WindowsEverything else (including my work T61) is Linux. I run Windows in VirtualBox at the office if I absolutely need to have Excel to run our VBA plugin

Abandoning Windows is the right decision for me for older computers, but not the best decision for newer computers yet for my uses. Linux is nice, but there's just too much of the convenience and clean interface with a Vista x64 install. Vista x64 performs really well with a higher ram xpx m1330 system. I have a hardy heron install which is awesome for scientific computing, programming, and graphic editing, but I miss Office 2007 and the Microsoft Live software far too much when I'm on the linux install. However, my old desktop (P4 ~ 1 GHz, 798 MB RAM ) works much better on an Ubuntu than on Windows XP install.
There is no good/better replacement for Windows Live, e-sword, Zune software, and Microsoft Office 2007 on linux. If wine could handle this stuff well, linux could be the better solution in most cases. -
-
I can get by with Linux only for everything except gaming right now....maybe can do that with cedega or something. My blackberry sync is iffy, I sync over the air with Schedule World via Funambol for BB, then sync Thunderbird with Schedule World via the TB extension. I haven't trusted my work yet to a virtual machine, but it does work fine.
-
I read somewhere that the next version of Microsoft Office will come in an on-line application form (maybe in one version?), so that would make it much easier to run on linux I'm sure. Open Office 2.4 and Microsoft Office 2003 are practically equivilant for most purposes, but Microsoft Office 2007 makes tedious tasks like entering equations, plots, and formatting very quick and easy to where you get spoiled over the ease of use. Maybe Open Office 3.0 will work on this point
-
I only use Gentoo Linux on my systems. I do have Windows in VirtualBox, but I haven't had to use it for a long time.
-
I've dual-booted Linux off and on for years, though.
Who has abandoned Windows for Linux?
