    i tried to boot into vista yest., and i got this error-

    It seems you formatted your vista partition to ext2, that should have wiped out everything on there. Check in Gparted.

    Can Vista ever get confused as to which partition is which?

    I know in the "olden days" :)eek :) it was possible when creating or removing partitions to completely confuse XP. All the data was intact: the XP partition was there and fully functional except that when booting XP could not find its "C:" partition. Can the same thing happen in Vista?

    Maybe, it's never happened to me but this may be a special case.

    It's a grub error. Post the following outputs;
    Code:
    cat /boot/grub/menu.lst
    and
    Code:
    sudo fdisk -l

    Wouldn't that put the windows boot manager over grub?

    No, it's always fixed the bad link between grub and Vista boot up....done it many times while distro hopping between lilo's and grubs, etc

    Shucks, it can't hurt too much to keep it around. I know I will, if just for DOS games and helping other people with Windows. :cool:
