Keep in mind that if you booted the laptop with the mouse plugged in (I'm assuming it's got a USB dongle receiver) that it likely won't work. Linux has issues with that kind of thing. In fact, on my machine, if I leave something in the USB port as I'm booting it up, that USB port won't work until I restart the computer.

I have a Logitech Laser "Smart" mouse with volume control buttons, email, IM button, and back and forward. I was surprised to see it worked great without any configuration. The email button opens up Evolution and the volume buttons work. However, I cannot get the back and forward buttons to work in Firefox.

Although I don't use USB dongle, I bootup my laptop every time with USB laser mouse, and it never troubles me. Maybe it is not good of USB wireless mouse only. My bluetooth dongle also plugin my desktop all the time, and boot never complain to me.

Which mouse do you have? I recently bought a Logitech V450, and it works with absolutely no work whatsoever (just had to put the dongle in the USB port).
