    Hello All,

I recently installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my XPS M1210 and I can't get my wireless working.
This is my card (from lpsci): Broadcom Corporation BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 01)

I have tried the Windows Wireless Drivers utility and downloaded both the vista and xp driver from Dells website but when I click 'Configure Network' I get the following error message:
"Could not find a Network Configuration Tool"

Can anyone please shed some light on how to get this working.

    Thanks in advance!

You can't use a Windows driver, that's not how it works. If you connect to the internet temporarily via the ethernet port, Ubuntu should automatically detect that your system is in need of the restricted driver b43 and install it for you. Then you'll be good to go.

thanks for your suggestions but nothing is working. The Windows Wireless Drivers Utility is a GUI for ndiswrapper I think. However, I have tried to install ndiswrapper using the terminal with no Luck and I have tried fwcutter. On the Hardware Drivers it says that the 'Broadcom B43 Wireless Driver' is installed but I can't even see wireless networks and when I run iwconfig it just says 'no wireless extensions'

Please can anyone help me the wireless is the only thing not working.

On my older laptop with Broadcom chip there was an icon automagically installed on the panel at the top of the screen to download/install restricted drivers. Click on that and it should bring up a dialog that should be capable of installing the driver you need. You can also find it in System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers. As Hep! mentioned, you will need some other Internet connection on which the drivers will be downloaded. (There's probably a way around this but I am not familiar with that.)

I'm not sure what you mean by "Windows Wireless Drivers utility" but it sounds like something for Windows, not Linux.

    HTH,

Follow this thread in the Ubuntu forums and see if it helps you:

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=616801

If not, like I said, go to the Ubuntu forums and enter 'BCM4328' in the search box.

That Broadcom wifi device is one of the most problematic in Linux. I would get a wireless usb adapter if it doesn't work. When I get my laptop, I'm ensuring it's an Intel-based one. The Broadcom one might work via ndiswrapper but even if Linux claims support, don't you think that it's probably really unreliable considering there's no GOOD write-ups on how to get the native driver working? Imho, that's telling you something. In summary, try that thread and if it fails, search the term above in the forums and see if anything you find helps. Sorry, I am not familiar with Broadcom wifi but if I had to deal with it, those are the steps I'd take.
