As the title says i've come with major problems making my Tecra A4 work on Kubuntu 7.10. As soon as the installation is complete i reboot i can see the splash screen and then...blank! A black screen appears.

I then installed Kubuntu 8.04 Hardy and the screen thing was fixed (obviously they included some support for the ATI graphics card) BUT...

i have no wireless no ethernet! I've read many things about ieee80211 package and ipw2200 drivers for my wireless card but in vain.. I get compile errors when try to install them.

Has anyone honestly have a Tecra A4 working with linux??

If Ubuntu doesn't support your wireless out of the box even with a restricted driver, most likely you will need to use ndis wrapper with the Windows driver for your card.

When you say you have no ethernet, does that mean that you plug a network cable into the LAN interface with a known, good router, but the system doesn't see a network at all? I can believe that the wireless might be squirelly, but usually wired is not a problem.

What to do you see if you enter the command ifconfig? What about iwconfig?
Lastly, what do you see if you enter lspci?

Your WiFi chipset should be supported by the Intel ipw2200 driver. There should be lots of howtos as to how to configure support for this chipset. Like this one. Your wired ethernet port is likely a Marvell one, and you need to make sure you have the sky2 module loaded to support it. Using the most recent version of your distro helps because there's been lots of problems with earlier sky2 driver revisions from Marvell. So the more recent the kernel, the more recent the sky2 driver.

    Good Luck..

First things first.. My wireless card is Intel 2200 and the ethernet is a Marvel Yukon. During the installation of 7.10 i had the ethernet cable plugged in but it didn;t downloaded any updates nor i had a connection when i finally booted in kubuntu. same thing with wireless. ifconfig and iwconfig show that my devices are detected the drivers for the wireless (ipw2200) are there but still...

F6 in the initial install screen and add no irqpoll before the -- at the end of the startup parameters will give both the wired and wireless NIC full functionality.
