I recently purchased this ASUS from Best Buy and immediately noticed issues with the DVD drive... it would boot a LiveCD, but not work shortly after that... the symptom being after the initial spin down the DVD drive would not restart or would start to spin and never stop.

I got by that with setting the controller to compatible mode, but after that problem I would get a laggy X session (Gnome) 1 out of 4 boots. The graphic update on system manager would be jerky unless I was moving my mouse. I then disabled the sound card and that problem went away.

While I may have been able to fix the issues eventually there was a discussion on Launchpad.net in a bug report that indicated the problem was with the DVD drive itself and bad firmware.

Depressed I returned the unit to BB.

Other than those issues the unit was very nice and the LED lit LCD display was very bright.
