Maybe because it won't sell well. Its safe to say the majority of computer users are either on OSX or Windows operating systems. Linux OSes are not commonly sold in consumer computers. Dell is taking a risk here and obviously targeting a niche. The downside here being the cost for what is commonly known in the community as a "free OS for all." There's also the cost of Dell support as well as the hardware they chose for this model. -

Dell has sold preloaded Linux machines for a while now. At least 5 years.

...and... how well have they sold? How did the market (enthusiasts) react? -

I really don't know.. they haven't really been consistent with their releases. Their netbooks were probably the biggest sellers in terms of Linux preloaded, like the mini 9 and latitude 2100.
Here are some of their current linux offerings:

Very cool, so Dell must be making some money but I don't imagine they are these are HOT sellers. Looks like these Linux machines are suffering the same fate as a lot of AMD-based notebooks (low-res displays, low performance cpus, not that thin or light, poor selection, poor advertising/awareness). -
$1449? seems kind of expensive for what your getting. You would think it would be slightly cheaper with a free OS and no windows licensing fee.

With the incentives that they have to put win8 on their computers and then all of the third party stuff that ends up as bloatware, it may cost more to ship a Linux OS. Or they may be pricing it so as to not anger the great Ballmer.
Or maybe they just suck at pricing? -
(1) Subsidies from "bloatware" aren't there to keep the price down.
(2) Dell's R&D costs for drivers, firmware, testing, etc cost more on a per-machine basis because they're going to sell fewer Linux models of the XPS 13 than Windows XPS 13s. -
That price includes support also. Still too expensive for me but good to see it out there.
