    hello

i'm looking to purchase a notebook soon and am wondering if anyone can tell me if they've had any good (or bad) experiences with linux on either the asus g1 or z84jp.

    thanks!

Well, both feature nVidia graphics and the Intel 3945 wireless, which should be good for most Linux distributions (though the drivers for the wireless aren't exactly free, and thus aren't included out of the box with many distributions). Other than that, the webcam on the z84jp most likely won't be supported, but there may be workarounds. Bluetooth will also likely give you troubles, as they have with other W7J users, but a recent user here got that working as well.

Thanks for the reply! By work-around for the webcam, are you referring to dual-booting or running ms as a virtual machine? I know there are some webcam driver projects for linux out there and have read reports of some notebook users getting a linux driver for their webcam going.

I'm mostly concerned about hibernate/suspend and power management and setting up the F-button functions. I'm confident that I can get the display, keyboard, touchpad, usb ports, and wireless going. It would be nice to have the card reader function (one user here reported card reader functioned fine with Z84JP in the Z84JP Owner's Lounge thread). To a lesser degree, I'd want the bluetooth and webcam to function - although these would be the last priority.
