ok, seeing if higher minds can solve the issue.. basically I have a linux lappy (HP 8530P) I want to get music on my Ipod.

how the on earth is this to be done? I've kinda got my music into amarok (it's on the right hand side panel) but I don't know how to move it into "collections". I can delete songs off my ipod and transfer them to my computer... This is starting to me off.

    I'm on 10.04
    Ipod Nano 4G 16GB.

ok... looked at the guides but they must be really really old my installation of amarok doesn't look anything like any of those... not even close (the last ones not to far off). I know how to get it on the Ipod if I can get it in the 'collections' but I can't get anything into any of the "collections".

anyway I discovered RythmBox works for music... any others that work with Videos? other than amarok (unless you can figure out what's going on here)?

I'm gonna try banshee... well see... let me know!

banshee = fail. doesn't do anything. gtkpod only seems to work with music... I just get a 'file format error" upon adding a media file (I got the media file out of my windows itunes library so it should work).\

edit2. got banshee kinda working! music copies over fine, but video don't they copy over as music(ish) for example I used Robin Hood was listed as Robin%20Hood in my music folder.

OK well since i used gtkpod to do 2 Ipod nanos and have no problems with it i just suggest you gtkpod for syncing and downloading music from and to ipods.

the only issue i have sometimes is the ipod wont be recognized all you need to do is unmount and mount it again while the program is running

OK never tried videos with it tho

rm2. don't worry I hate my Ipod but at the time it was the best thing available (unfortunately you can't buy Zune anymore).

ok, I got it all working with Banshee!! music is fine, videos don't go in the videos folder, rather they go in the music videos folder(good enough).

    Zune?

I just have a strong aversion for products that place artificial barriers to my use of them. I have had all my music in ogg format for years. I used to play it on my Palm using AeroPlayer which did a very fine job. I was almost tempted to get a Rio Carbon or an iRiver H320, but I couldn't justify buying a single purpose device when I could do it all on my Palm. Now I have a Nokia N900 which encompasses a phone, GPS, Music, Video, Entertainment, and Work functions all in one. Sure, it is probably an overkill for someone that is only interested in a simple music player. Still, I would never consider buying a restrictive device like the iPod. If I was going to buy a device just for playing music I would look for one that supported ogg, since that would give me an indication of the mentality of the device's creators. Look here for some interesting choices:

The iRiver the H100 (formerly named iHP-100 series) and H300 series had excellent audio quality, my iHP-110 was the best portable player that I've owned so far - the audio quality was absolutely superb.
