I just installed it on my Thinkpad, and I've just about got it updated to the latest image. I'm really not sure where to start learning it's ways, so if anyone has any tips they're greatly appreciated.
So far I'm having some issues with nwamd (the network configuration daemon). It doesn't connect to my wireless network until I kill it and let it respawn, but hopefully the latest image will fix that up.
Unfortunately, all the documentation I've found hardly scratches the surface...

I think it's got potential. It was missing some driver support last I checked it a few months ago...have they updated it? I'll go take a looksie

It supports my ethernet and wireless, anyway. I didn't have any problems with the wireless not connecting once I got the latest image loaded, either. I didn't try my bluetooth or pcmcia.
Unfortunately, I couldn't get my delete, pgup, and pgdn keys working in Gnome Terminal. That was always tricky in some Linux flavors, but I haven't seen it for years, and just couldn't crack it in Solaris. That's a total deal breaker for me, and I didn't have the time to mess around any more.
They should be releasing a new ISO in November, so we'll see how things are then. Gnome seemed much snappier than in Linux, though boot was a little slower than I'm used to (and didn't touch Arch), and I really like the theme besides some artifacting around some buttons. -
Just remember... Solaris is a true Unix, whereas Linux is a Unix-like OS. There will be some not-so-small culture differences in running them. I haven't use Solaris that much, so I can't remember all the specifics, but I do remember being stymied a few times because they didn't do things the Linux way.

I've got the lastest development build, gonna see what's changed from the 2008.5 I tried back in May

Why are you using Solaris? Just something new to learn?

Basically
I'm studying to go into IT, and am starting to get into a focus on UNIX and Cisco. Right now my classes are still focused on Linux, but soon I'll be getting more into Solaris and BSD, maybe some AIX if I'm lucky.
I figure the future is mostly going to be about Linux and BSD, and Solaris is probably on it's way out, but I think it's a good idea to get a feeling for some of the other options out there, and it would be nice to at least know my way around. -
Not bad, not bad. That's a good study attitude.

I guess, something new, but it seems polished to me...why not? Actually, I'm a Kubuntu guy...just checking it out.
anyone use Open Solaris?
