At the simplest level, it usually means selecting the sources (repositories) that the apt package management tools will download from. I believe in Ubuntu, you have a GUI tool that avoids the need for you having to hand edit the /etc/apt/sources.list

Right OK thanks. I'll do some research! Do you know what task sel is? and while I'm at it can I also ask about DHCP? Thanks!

Can anyone recommend a good eBook on Linux for me to improve my knowledge - I'm getting really into this sort of stuff at the moement?!
-
IMHO you'll probably learn more from reading threads in places like ubuntuforums.org. As for troubleshooting - you learn best when you do it hands on.

Samba is a service which lets your linux PC 'talk' to windows PCs on the network. I.e. access shares, etc.

OK Thanks. I'll try that.
And great! Samba sounds cool. Thanks! -
The best way to learn is to find something you want to do, and then figure out how to do it. Check through howto's and such, and consider reading this Intro to Linux.

Indeed, it's the best way to learn.
