At the simplest level, it usually means selecting the sources (repositories) that the apt package management tools will download from. I believe in Ubuntu, you have a GUI tool that avoids the need for you having to hand edit the /etc/apt/sources.list

IMHO you'll probably learn more from reading threads in places like ubuntuforums.org. As for troubleshooting - you learn best when you do it hands on.

Samba is a service which lets your linux PC 'talk' to windows PCs on the network. I.e. access shares, etc.

The best way to learn is to find something you want to do, and then figure out how to do it. Check through howto's and such, and consider reading this Intro to Linux.

Thanks. I'll have a play around with it a bit more and see what problems arise!
