i ran the new ubuntu off the the live cd and i can't change the resolution from 800x600. there are no higher options in the appearance>resolution screen

resolution is so bad that most windows don't even fit entirely, so i can't exactly read everything..including the installation screens...which is defiantly troublesome.

anyone know how to fix this?

If you have dual monitor set up for the machine that can cause problem, it does when I used a desktop with a DVI and VGA both plugged in, it locked the res at the lowest one depends on your screen. In my case 1024 x 765 because that's the one screen that I had which is inferior. This is my desktop experience, I don't know about laptop thou.
