I think you're going to have to download the language packs for Firefox. Go here for help. I can view chinese sites just fine on my web browser. ???

I can verify that on my Ubuntu 6.10 install, I can view Chinese characters perfectly.

I would advise against using small-time distros like Linux Mint, while based completely on Ubuntu (and having cool features which save Ubuntu users time), it has a very small user base and the help you get is minimal. Of course, using ubuntuforums.org should answer most of your concerns - but as you point out, there are obviously discrepancies that we cannot help you with.

One of my friends installed Linuxmint, and I recall he had to install the following packages ttf-arphic-ukai and ttf-arphic-uming to get chinese fonts.
ttf-arphic-ukai - "AR PL ZenKai Uni" Chinese Unicode TrueType font Kaiti style
ttf-arphic-uming - "AR PL ShanHeiSun Uni" Chinese Unicode TrueType font Mingti style

    You can try to run
    sudo apt-get install ttf-arphic-ukai ttf-arphic-uming

The package names I used are from Breezy and not Edgy, so the names *may* have change, but I don't recall that they did.

can anyone help me with this problem i have with chinese characters? Here is the scenario...I opened a .doc file with traditional characters in it...and it views 80 percent of the characters just fine but it skips like one or two words and leaves it as an open space...in my XP computer it sees it just fine but for some reason when i use Ubuntu it doesnt recognizes some characters? I installed the language packs so it cant be that...so im really at a lost now.

I'm guessing it's a font issue; the freefonts that come with Ubuntu may just not have all the traditional characters (there are thousands, after all). Did you try changing it to a different font temporarily, to see if that works?
