I recently bought a Hp dv5t and looking to install a linux distro on it as a dual boot with vista. Has anyone here had experience installing linux on this particular laptop? Im leaning towards using Ubuntu or Kubuntu.

ubuntu will work, but you may have to play around with the wifi card if you have a broadcom chip.

If you know enough about Linux to install Arch, I suggest you try it out. They have 2.6.27 now, so you would be able to use the 5100. Gentoo has it as well, but it's masked right now.

Give wubi a test drive. You can install and uninstall it like a windows program. download.com has wubi then a 700 Mb download. No need to partition your hard drive. You can choose ubuntu or kubuntu on install.

wubi still only has the 8.04 version of ubuntu, from what ive read 8.04 does not support the intel 5100 link card.

As a Linux newbie, I'd highly suggest something more user-friendly like Ubuntu, and wait a couple days until 8.10 comes out. It will support your wireless card, and it should give you a pretty good "transition" experience, as well as having one of the largest communities, so your problems will more likely have been experienced and solved by someone else, so you aren't left to your own devices if you have any issues.

Has anyone tried Ubuntu 8.10 on the dv5t yet? If so, how's the compatibility?

I have it on the dv7t. It works great. Similar hardware, so you should be fine.

I had Ubuntu 8.10 running on a DV5t. Everything that I had time to test worked out of the box. Unfortunately, the video card died 3 hours after I unpacked it, and I am still waiting on the replacement.

I had the Intel 5100 card, and it worked with no further setup.
