so i just want to do a simple thing. Set a default size for all windows that are opened because the default is really small and I always have to resize them.
I am talking about folders, terminal, notepad, etc, etc
I can't find any documentation whatsoever for this CCSM, and also it is somewhat confusing. I have changed the window rules and place windows and the only luck I had is that now the window shows at the center.
I played and played with a bunch of settings but I don't see any result, a bit frustrating.
As someone any experience or can point to a guide with some specific instructions?

Here's what I found using examples from the Compiz wiki.
- In the Compiz Settings manager you open the Window Rules plugin.
- Click on the Size Rules tab.
- Click on the button labelled New.
A window for editing your new rule should open up. - In the field labelled Sized Windows type class=Nautilus.
- Using the sliders or the fields provided, adjust the Width and Height of Nautilus windows to your preferred size.
- Click Close.
- On the left-hand side of the Compiz Settings Manager Window click Enable Window Rules.
This is all I have to do to change the default size of a file browser window using Compiz. What I don't like about this solution is that I assume it stops working if I turn Compiz off. While I haven't yet used Powertop to analyse my power usage, I assume Compiz runs down the battery since it uses the graphics card for fancy effects. Surely there should be a way to do this using just Nautilus preferences, GConf, or X or something. However, I haven't found that way yet.
Edit: Yes, it's also possible to set the window size rules in gconf. I'll only sketch this out as it appears Compiz directly changes these settings meaning there's no point in going into GConf.
- Press alt-F2.
- In the Run Application dialog box type in gconf-editor.
- In the Configuration Editor window left hand side tree-style view navigate to /apps/nautilus/preferences.
- Scroll down to the item called navigation_window_saved_geometry.
- Click on the Value column under this entry.
- Change the first two values in this entry to reflect the new W[W][W]...xH[H][H]... that you'd like in new nautilus file browser windows.
You might want to just record the initial values so you can change them back, if you want. I forgot to do this.
Edit 2: There doesn't seem to be a system wide setting for this. You'll have to make a rule for each application for which you want to change the default. Different applications may handle it differently. For example there's a Default Size entry on the General tab in the Profile Preferences menu option on the Edit menu under Gnome Terminal. -
rep to you man! you saved me! I still have to figure out the positioning pattern.
