i need to know if someone had installed ubuntu in your notebook? if you had done it, how? thanx

    here's what happened to me:

i tried running the ubuntu cd (ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition 64-bit) on my laptop and boot it. the cd booted on a ubuntu menu which i try to run it using the live cd. it continue to load in ubuntu loading screen but after that it will go to a command prompt just like ms dos prompt. what could be the problem? im currently using a 32bit windows vista starter edition

According to this post on Ubuntu forums, Ubuntu 8.10 runs well, except for a sound issue, on a Presario CQ40-104TU.

Why don't you download 8.10, burn it to a CD and try it out.
If you boot from the CD, you can work with/test Ubuntu without actually installing anything.
    Cheers.

Use WUBI (windows ubuntu installer). You can uninstall it like a normal program if it doesnt work properly on your notebook.

Yes it saves you all the hassles. Read the FAQ.

It allows you to install ubuntu like a regular program.

Yeah, i use vista/ubuntu on my notebook and XP/Ubuntu using WUBI at work

Its a good setup as ubuntu is very reliable backup if vista crashes.

    Did you use WUBI?

Download a program called Cheese in ubuntu. Its a very cool program with different camera effects.

My HP worked 99% out of the box.

You use them in Terminal which is the command prompt for ubuntu. Its for experienced linux users that like using command lines.

    Install Cheese(Applications>Add/Remove)

For codecs install ubuntu-restricted-extras, using the same method.

This will install flash, mp3, etc. For wma look at medibuntu(google). Here's the updated version of my guide that flipfire linked you here.

Im not too sure for ATI but for Nvidia you just install the restricted driver and install compiz-fusion. Im guessing it will be the same or similar

    Check Administrator > Hardware drivers

then search for compiz in add/remove programs.

With CCSM you have everything to make a sphere or cube.
Google for the settings others have used, it's not hard to find but without the correct settings you won't see a nice sphere. ;)

You have installed Ubuntu 8.10 32-bit, so you already have a movie player called mplayer.
Exe files are windows executables, they don't work under linux.
If, for whatever reason, you want to try to run a windows program in linux, you can install Wine.
Before going that route, you better learn a bit about Wine, only a few Windows programs run well under wine, others are hit and miss.
Start with the Wine homepage for instance.
    Cheers.

Like I explained before, there are 3 different ways to install with Ubuntu.
On this page, you can find a how-to install Wine with the 3 different options.
    Cheers.
