Thanks John B....while you here, what about an iso burning program for linux? preferably available thru synaptic? I didn't see that I already had one installed.

K3B is the best CD/DVD burning tool in Linux, as far as I know. For file synchronization you may also want to check out Grsync.

i would also recommend k3b, it has an option to burn a little bit to a cd now, then burn some more later if you want. you can set it up so it doesnt close the unused parts of the cd/dvd.

I tried to use Unison, but it looks like I can only sync locally....I need sync to the external HD....anything else out there that can be recommended?

EDIT: Ok, I mean from my usb drive to my external drive.....sorry :D What I'm doing is saving my tax data from a Virtual Machine to a USB drive in Virtualbox because I don't want all that data imprisoned in a single .vbi file that I have no control over if it got corrupted somehow. It seems to be the only way I break the virtual machine 'barrier' :D Sharing folders would be the answer, but no matter how I set samba shares or VirtualBox shares, the tax program can see the data files, but can't read or write to them for some strange reason. Therefore I'm trying to sync the USB drive data to my External HD which is mounted all the time. whew....booting in windows to do it NOT the answer lol. I'll never keep up with it if I can do it in one step.

that's my sob story :D Nevermind, I'll just copy and paste...works as long as I don't forget :D
