I did a clean install of xp pro on a 25GB partition and have 272GB of unallocated space left over. I want to put hardy heron 8.04 back on here and dual boot. Do I need to format the 272GB first then try to install HH8.04, or when i load HH8.04 on here will grub format the whole 272 for me? I want to put HH8.04 on it's own partition and then have the rest for data. How much space would you recommend for HH?

Give HH as much as you think you will need with all your programs installed. You can either format the 272 now or break it up and format a partition for HH and a data partition. Since XP doesn't have the partition tools Vista has, you could use 3rd party software to do this. I do not know for sure what options the disc with HH has for partioning and formatting, but it wouldn't hurt to pop it in and check.

Depending on what you do, somewhere between 15 and 25GB should be plenty. Ubuntu is pretty good with partitioning on install, so you do it manually. You can also check it this partitioning tool; it is very advanced, and is free:

Thanx fella's, I used acronis disk director and got it all worked out with XP 20GB, HH 20GB and 256 for data, and .9GB for grub.
