I found this on slickdeals.net today.
"Ubuntu offers a PDF Edition of Ubuntu Pocket Guide and Reference for download Free of charge. "
It seems like a nice basic guide on ubuntu by Kier Thomas. It is about 170 pages and easy to read and understand.

Yes,
I was going to post this on this forum as well. I downloaded it and skimmed the table of contents. It is a pretty good basic guide. Even talks about the package manager and APT. And you can't beat the price -
thanks! ++

Itsa nice guide...
I had to switch to Ubuntu to read it as its unreadable in my Windoes machines using AR 5.0.
I've requested to the author to make a readable version for Windows
as I've never ran into a PDF I could not read until now. -
That is a useful guide; so many of the linux documentation and aids come only in webpage format, which is murder to try and carry downstairs with you for a quick smoke (especially when you're supposed to be doing work back upstairs!
).
Opened with reader 7.0 without a problem; perhaps marconi's problem was using a too-old version of reader? -
Purple Ox Brigade Notebook Enthusiast
hey thanks. i was looking for something like this!
-
Perhaps...5.0 is old but it should have worked anyway.
I download tons and tons of PDF's and hadnt ran into problems viewing them until this one.
I dont like the new format of AR so thats why I've never upgraded.
Besides..shouldnt the new programs be backward compatable?
5.0 is simpler and less bloated and always got the job done for me.
I did try with OpenOffice however, It too didnt work, very strange but that application is bloated as well..
I'm gunna have to figure out this one..
To a veteran computer user, Bloated software sticks out bad like an ugly dog no-one wants.
ah well... Works well with the linux reader ok. -
Good stuff!! Thanks for sharing. It just so happened that I downloaded and installed 8.10 this morning and brought it in to work to play with. I was going to update PCLOS, but decided to give this one a try. Only thing I can't figure out getting compiz working. I downloaded emerald theme manager, but that ain't working for me either.
-
To get compiz to work, first install proprietary drivers either directly from ATI/nVidia or from admin-->hardware and then just use the add/remove programs GUI.
-
Sweet! Thanks.I am planning to build a pc and using ubuntu 8.10.Should I run it on a Windows machine before I use it as my sole OS?I need speed for research, internet, and compiling data.
