I am loving so many things about my new linux ubuntu computer. My only qualm is that I am finding downloading various programs types difficult. I havent really mastered when/how to use the various ways of downloading files. Any help or tutorials would be great.

for most of your "common" applications you'll need I'd recommend instalilng automatix as it will install them all for you automatically and even put all the right repos in your sources.list for you. Also make sure you enable universe, multiverse, and restricted in your "software sources" (under System -> Administration -> software sources)
