It all comes down to personal preference, compiz/beryl are available for xfce, gnome and kde. You can integrate xfce, gnome and kde into any distro as well.

Xfce is lightweight so better for lower end systems, Gnome is sort of a Mac OS type look where as KDE is more like a Windows look.

Nvidia/Ati drivers are available for every distribution, just in some its easier to install and use them with a few clicks.

You can make any distro look flashy, but not all of them are user friendly, stable, easy to use and come with out of the box support. So first decide what you want to do with the distribution besides making it look flashy then get back to us.

Get Linux Mint - it's pretty damn good and very user friendly. You can use their forum and ubuntuforums for help.

About looking cool: If you want top-notch visual performance, I would suggest to install Xfce4 and possibly compiz-fusion for eye candy. Then you can get Xfce4 themes at http://www.xfce-look.org/ or Compiz themes at http://www.compiz-themes.org/.

About distros: If you are used to work with Linux, you may also consider Arch Linux, which is optimized for modern processors and allows you to install only those packages that you really need (ie. minimal bloat).

If you are newbie you may want to opt for well supported Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Suse distro with KDE or GNOME. There are also KDE themes http://www.kde-look.org/ and GNOME themes http://www.gnome-look.org/. And of course, you can install Xfce4 and compiz-fusion easily on these distros too, so you can actually use KDE/GNOME/Xfce4 on the same system with out noticable performance penalty - but this will take only more hard disk space (ie. bloat).

I prefer Gnome personally for various reasons, but KDE is more customisable, so you may want to go that route.

The only laptop I run linux has just 8MB of video RAM (Non-expandable), so I don't get to dabble with Compiz much. It looks cool though.

I do agree with the Mint linux option though. It looks pretty good to start, and comes with Compiz.

My personal favorites for looks would be Sabayon (based on Debian with KDE or Gnome options) or OpenGEU (based on Ubuntu using Enlightenment and bits of Gnome for the desktop).
