I have installed a whole bunch of packages, but still can't play a simple wmv file that I picked from the net (I'm sure it has no DRM).
I added medibuntu to sources.list. What I have installed so far: w32codecs, libxine1, libxine1-ffmpeg, libxine1-kde, kaffeine-xine, libxine-extracodecs, libarts1-xine, libsmpeg0, mpeglib, libmpeg2-4, and probably a lot other stuff as well, such as from the adept -> Other -> RestrictedFormats.
So what else could be missing? I read the help.ubuntu.com pages and asked helped in the ubuntuforums, not to mention the kubuntu irc channel, but nobody seems to know.

The w32codecs package takes care of VMV, I believe. Try reloading w32codecs.
-
EDIT: reinstalling w32codecs did not solve it. Still only get a black screen with kaffeine and vlc crashes without an error. -
If you install all of the codecs from Synaptic, it should work.
-
Maybe you should install also mplayer, mozilla-mplayer, mencoder.
This works for my under Iceweasel (Firerfox)

VLC should be able to play a simple wmv right? If VLC cant play it plus its making it crash... maybe there is something wrong with the file. Have u tried other movies in wmv format?
-
All wmv movies I tried have this problem. Maybe the w32codecs package from medibuntu is broken. Is there another place from where I can download and install it?
-
Go to add/remove apps and type in codecs under search. Install ALL codecs.
Also make sure add/remove apps is set to all programs.
Do the same with Synaptic.
It should work now. -
I've finally found the problem, and it turns out to be Beryl. Switching back to kwin plays the wmv files without problems, but when Beryl is switched on, I get the problems described above.
-
If you use VLC in Beryl, you may have to change the video output to get it to work. I don't know where exactly in the options it is, but change that module to X11 and you should be sweet. This fixed AVI problems I used to have when I used VLC.
how to play a wmv file in kubuntu feisty?
