    sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
    sudo sh NVIDIA* xxxxxxx .run
    sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

enable the driver from restricted driver manager
    ctr + alt + backspace

This happened to me too... right now I just reinstalled ubuntu and just logged in... The Restricted Drivers notification came up again... not sure if I should enable the driver... I don't want to go back to 640x420 resolution again!

On to look for a driver?? or is there none?

You need to restart X-server; Linux does not always behave as Windows does. You can restart X-server by logging out and back in.
