Hi, I have mandriva linux 2007.1 running on a dell 1420 laptop the sound card is a sigmatel 9228. Sound is working great from the headphone jack but the internal laptop speakers aren't working. Right now I'm using the snd-hda-intel driver. I would try another one but I there are a million other choices and I don't know which ones to try.

    Thanks for the help.

Check all the channels on your sound mixer. There should be separate ones for headphones and laptop speakers. The speaker channel may be muted or turned too low.

Incidently, I'm having a slightly different problem with my 1520 (which I believe uses the same Intel HD Audio card) and Feisty. The speakers and the headphones both work, but the speakers do not mute when the headphones are plugged in and there is only one channel, so I cannot mute them manually. May I ask what kernel, driver module, and alsa version you are running? Thanks!

I have Sony Vaio FZ, which also uses Sigmatel chip ( I am not sure if it is the same chip, though). The combination of recent ALSA update (I am using Arch linux - depending on distro, you may have to manually compile it) and adding the line "options snd-hda-intel model=vaio position_fix=0" (where to add this line depends on your distro) made jack-sensing work. Without the ALSA update, jack-sensing did not work.

Model=vaio is for Sigmatel chips, so I think it worths a try. If it fails, you may want to try newer ALSA, either by compiling it manually or use the distro that comes with it (I think Ubuntu Gutsy has this update now).

<edited> Or you can try this.

download the development version of alsa-driver 1.0.15rc2 and compile and install. Maybe that should solve it. Mine got solved by this driver.
