finally decided to give ubuntu a try again(hardy heron wouldn't support hdmi video) so i got intrepid.

amazingly fast, "ready to use"(almost) but stuck with a few problems...

1.) HDMI output works with the default drivers that come installed. But the resolution is off : I can't see the top and bottom, and I can't use the 3D-effects with default drivers.

-- Got envy, and tried the 173 and 177 drivers. but then HDMI stops working...

2.) Incredibly SLOW download speeds. What usually achieves 500-600 kb/sec in any other OS/computer in the house is going at 5000 Bytes/sec - 20 kb/sec.... (taking hours and hours to download updates)

any help??, video card is 8800 Mobile(laptop), and the wirless card is the the 4xxx intel one. (don't know exact number )

Thanks... would really like to get the HDMI out working with better drivers, then I'd probably stick with intrepid.

UPDATE: slowdownload speeds are only though update manager, otherwise it's fine...

    More Problems:
1.) Transparent windows aren't really transparent..(see through), you can see the lag and the image being redrawn and it's only of desktop. If you pull it over gedit or something, it'll still show the desktop not whats under it....

2.) USplash Screen missing :-/ (on startup)... on startup instead of the loading bar I only see a screen of texts (and sometimes white bars going up and down), the Screen shutting down/restarting shows though....

ANY help at all pleassE? :s

Try a different update server, for one thing. Was the splash screen always missing?

Yes, I can tell from experience that the difference can be dramatic. When I came to Taiwan, I forgot to change my servers and the first few updates were terribly slow. But even changing the server took a bit of work because the "official" server for Ubuntu in Taiwan is actually fairly flaky. I checked out the other Taiwanese servers until I found one which was reliable and fast.
