Can i install Linux based operating systems on hp Dv5t ??
-
Of course.
But how easy it will be will depend on what distribution (distro) you use.
There are many linux distros out there, but the one most recommended for new users is Ubuntu. It's easy to install and will give you a working system with minimal labor. So just go ahead and give it a shot. If you run into any problems you can't solve yourself, the linux community is here to help you. -
On my HP dv9700t, everything except the fingerprint reader worked out of the box with Kubuntu. If the dv5t's hardware is similar at all, it should work well for you.
-
Yes i Hope so..
I will try and then let you people know
-
I have a dv5z, which is identical to the dv5t except processor and gpu. You will most likely have some sound and wireless problems in Ubuntu, but it's nothing that can't be fixed. Good luck to you!
-
Actually, the wireless and audio chipsets are different as well. The AMD Pavilions use Broadcom wireless chips, whereas the Intel Pavilions use Intel wireless chips. Intel wireless chips work automatically in Linux, whereas Broadcom ones don't. Same thing with the sound card - the Intel Pavilions use Intel chips, whereas the AMD Pavilions use something else.
-
Oh, didn't know that. Well, than the OP probably won't have any problems with Ubuntu. Intel dominance of the entire market ftw
-
Not to mention that the dv5z/dv5t are new platforms. I'm surprised there are drivers available out of the box with ubuntu hardy, if indeed that is the case.
-
It depends on how different the chipsets are. If they are similar, there won't be any problems. Also keep in mind that the chipsets in the dv5t/dv5z may have already been used in other laptops, which means that support may have been added because of those. Also, updated install media was released for Hardy, as Ubuntu 8.04.1, 40 days ago.
-
The dv5t uses the new montevina platform, whereas the dv5z uses the new puma platform. Since hardy was released in april, I'd be surprised if either of them would work out of the box.
-
That's not necessarily true. The kernel has been updated since Hardy was released. Those updates could have added support for Puma and Montevina. A quick google didn't confirm or disprove that, but I'm guessing that processor support will at least be available as of 2.6.27. Of course, Hardy is still using 2.6.24, so support may not be available in it.
-
Oh I see. That's true. I'm using the DVD version, no upgrades as of yet.
-
You mean you're not installing updates from the repositories?
-
They also BOTH have Atheros cards I think, not sure.
But you can get a dv5t without an intel chip, and same with broadcom/dv5z. -
Really? What brand chip does it have then?
-
Not yet.
I'm still playing around with ubuntu.
-
Do you not have broadband? If you do, it takes almost no time to update.
-
I have semi-broadband.
I download anywhere from ~15-150KB depending on the network's mood.
Besides, with intrepid just around the corner, I may decide to hold off until it's released.
-
I just put Ubuntu on my dv5t. All I got so far was the video driver for the 9600M GT. The touch slider for the volume doesn't seem to control the volume. An icon pops up to show that its being used, but no control. Ubuntu loads up full blast on the speakers. Also, the wireless touch button isn't working. I hope someone finds a driver out there for it.
EDIT: I figured out the audio touch control (although the mute doesn't change to orange when muted).
Apparently the Intel WiFi 5100 cards are not supported (yet). Can anyone confirm this, or do we know of a fix?? Thanks -
Support was added 3 days ago, according to this post on the linux.kernel newsgroup. I don't know when it will be available in Ubuntu though - probably not until Intrepid Ibex. The best option right now is to install the current git revision of iwlwifi, as that will have support for the 5100AGN card.
-
5Strings - Did Ubuntu pick up your sound card properly? I've got the dv7t and assume we've got the same IDT onboard audio. Mine was detected but I get a failure - stutters or hangs when audio is played. I was about to start researching but I'd like to hear what your experience was. I'm assuming you went with Hardy not Ibex - let me know if I'm wrong. Thanks in advance.
-
are you satisfied with ubuntu ? i use broadband connection. will it works in ubuntu ?
-
The audio worked fine for me. My problem was that I had to choose the control that the slider controls (in sound options, there's faders for Master, PCM, and Front, I assume front is the speakers. I chose mine to run front).
I've used Ubuntu on my desktop before, and I like it. It's Linux for Windows people. It does everything for you. I have Fedora Core 9 on my desktop now, and it has a little more of a learning curve. I'm taking a Linux class this fall, which concentrated on FC9, so I'm sure I'll know a bit more by then.
I'm now stuck with the WiFi issue. I found the firmware and the driver, but apparently you need the 2.6.27 kerrnel, and I'm at 2.6.24. I'm trying to figure out how to update it so I can get the WiFi working. Michaelj, do you have the same issue, or do you not have the Intel WiFi Link 5100?
Everything else seems to work fine, especially after I d/led the nVidia driver.
EDIT: I just saw the Alpha 4 release of Intrepid Ibex. I'm installing it now, and will update. -
Thanks for the information on the audio. I must have a simple configuration issue - glad to hear it should be supported.
In regard to the wifi, that is definitely an issue for me as well. I may suck it up and live a tethered life when needed in Linux for the next month. I know there were some issues getting the NVIDIA drivers to co-exist in 2.6.27 RC2 so I'm a bit leary. I think RC3 was just released yesterday so I'll see if anything new pops up in the Linux forums. I'll post a solution if and when I've got it working. If you don't mind, please do the same. -
You don't get drivers to co-exist... you remove the ubuntu version and install the outside version
-
I've got the outside drivers working just fine in Hardy. That isn't the issue.
Wireless support is in 2.6.27 and my understanding is that the NVIDIA drivers were a real challenge to get working with the 2.6.27 RC2 kernel. These were not the Ubuntu drivers, these were the NVIDIA 'outside' version. That may no longer be an issue in RC3. -
I just tried out Ubuntu 8.04 on my dv7 before I sent it back (for a replacement) and I had most of the issues discussed here. I think it will be appropriate to give the bleeding-edge kernel revisions a go; you can get the source either from a repository or directly from git.
If you're using grub, it's ridiculously simple... at least compared to how we used to do it all by hand
Make sure you apply any patches if they are there.Code:make && make modules_install && make install

has anyone tried the HP TV tuner express card? I haven't figure out a way to get it working in ubuntu.
-
Hi I don't want to take the thread off track but I have the same problem with the same card in the Samsung Q310. I'm trying to use it in ubuntu. The problem I'm having is that neither my ethernet or my wifi is working so I can't update anything while I'm in ubuntu. I'm bumbling along with Vista for the moment but I really want to be using Ubuntu...
I'm not very experienced when it comes to using kernels and the like. Does anyone have any clear instructions or something to help me get this wifi to work. I really need 'Wifi drivers for dummies' I've tried everything I can think of and still nothing works. I've even tried the win xp drivers using ndiswrapper, it even says that hardware has been detected, it just won't use the blasted thing...
Any help? -
What brand card is it?
Did you try using Wicd? I've found that there can be connectivity issues with NetworkManager, which is really odd, considering it's just a frontend. Anyhow, Wicd doesn't have those problems - give it a shot. And try to get your ethernet connection working first, as it'll probably be a lot easier to get working than the wireless. -
Hi, I have now tried Wicd and no such luck of it wotrking. It even gives me an option of using the ndiswrapper driver and it still says there are no networks available. I really can't cope with ubuntu looking like crap. I need the internet, I don't want to have to convert myself back to windows...
-
You might be better off trying to install the most recent testing version of Ubuntu, since it is more likely to contain the necessary support for your newer network hardware, as opposed to trying to install the latest drivers for either the Intel WiFi, or Marvell Yukon ethernet, alone. There is one post on a french blog, which suggests someone was able to get the network working on their Q310 with a release of Ubuntu's Intrepid Ibex..
Good Luck.. -
Hmm do you think that it will have the support natively? coz I can't update from synaptic without a net connection... its a tad inconvenient.
-
hmm I'm having some trouble with instaling the dev version of ubuntu. It just won't work. not sure where to take it from here...
-
Maybe another distro that came out later?
Whats wrong with the dev install? -
i installed the newest version of ubuntu on my sister's dv5t. Everything that i have done so far is working. I got the ati working. just be sure to go into the update manager and do all the updates there.. there were around 140 installed. my mp3 worked right off the bat. i haven't tried the wireless yet..my router is being dumb. i will try it later.
but anyways i am working on getting realplayer installed right now.
i had tried ubuntu on my desktop before..i had quite a few things working. this was a while back ago. my only problem was gaming. I do remember having halo working though..
so far it's easier getting it to work on this laptop then it was on my desktop.
but if you know what you are doing and do some googling a lot of it hasn't been that hard. just getting this saved .bin file for realplayer is what i am having trouble with now.
good luck! -
Hey Guys,
I have an HP dv4t. I installed intrepid on it, because my wireless would not work with Hardy and my audio was messed up. In intrepid I was able to get the nVidia 177 drivers installed, wireless worked out of the box, as did the ethernet (in both Hardy and Intrepid). But I am still having the sound issue, starts with GDM and continues, sound seems to be stuttering in a loop, I'm still trying to figure it out, but no luck thusfar. If anyone has any tips I'd really appreciate it! -
yeah on my HP dv6810us, everything worked right away(wireless, trackpad, printer..etc..) Just had to install some codecs and such
-
For anyone with audio issues: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=912896 post 4 fixed it for me and at least one other person.
-
How long does it take to boot? Is it very fast?
-
The HP Pavilion dv5t includes the Intel Core 2 Duo 45nm processor at 2 - 2.8GHz, depending on model. There are also the new GMA X4500 integrated graphics, or one of the Nvidias dedicated GPUs - GeForce 9200M GS 256MB or GeForce 9600M GT 512MB. The laptop supports up to 4GB of DDR2 memory, up to 320GB of hard drive storage, and a DVD burner or Blu-Ray ROM. The 15.4″ display in this notebook has a resolution of 1280×800 or 1680×1050 pixels.

Intrepid 6 works great out of the box on my dv5t. Haven't found any issues, but I'm still in testing infancy. (64 bit ubuntu version)
-
Is bluetooth working?
-
Hi @ I was wondering if any of you guys tried to install any other flavor of Linux on the dv5t?
and how the driver search worked out for it?
thanks
