I've got a linux server running Mint 14. I'd like to get media center / media server functionality working. I'll need a PCI cable tv tuner that works on Linux (Mint) and software to go with it (including drivers).

One of the other major things I would like to do with this is stream cable tv (at least over my local netwok) out from this server to other devices on my network, and of course have some PVR functionality as well.

So I'm just looking for hardware and software advice.

    Thanks in advance.

MythTV works the best with encrypted feeds if you have a cable card. It can be a real pain to setup right though. I would recommend XBMC for the frontends if you use MythTV, its better then the MythFrontend. I have setup both in the past to test and got it working for the most part, I dont use it anymore because where I am now the cable is ClearQAM and so i just use TVHeadend as it is easier to setup.

AFA hardware I have read many positive comments about HDHomeRun Prime | Welcome to SiliconDust ... I am using the HD homerun Dual (for OTA) and am really happy with it. A friend of mine recommended Mythbuntu if I ever get cable with the prime.

The Prime is a rather good choice for linux setups because it can use DNLA streaming and that means you have a lot more options for managing it in terms of software.
