Hello!
So I just ordered a Powerpro G 3:11 and I plan on dual-booting it w/ XP Pro and probably Fedora, possibly ubuntu.
My question is with a modem. This computer comes with no serial port so I was wondering what kind of modem would work w/ either of these distrubutions of linux. I was also hoping you guys could give me a heads up on other hardware conflicts I will have...my specs are listed below. I really appreciate it!

you don't really need to worry about hardware conflicts, the processor, chipset, ram, video card, hdd, sound card, mmc slot, modem, eternet, ieee 1394 will work out of the box
for the intel wireless, you will have to go through the trouble of getting the drivers, installing, and rebuilding the kernel, etc if you want to run fedora. why not get suse 10, it will work right out of the box
for your dvd rw, a lot of linux distros do not have support for that burning, and when there is, you need to go through all the trouble again. but i am not sure on this one, cos i don't have a dvd rw.
for your graphics you will have no problems as you are running nvidia. only ati will have serious problems with linux, and i mean ALL distros. -
He might have problems with the modem- particularly if it's a soft or winmodem, which requires windows to make it work- for reasons that I can't recall. I know I can't get my modem to work in linux and that was the reason given to me. I -think- it might have been because there isn't really a driver to port over because the modem relies on some built into windows code or something like that.
However, I thought that the powernotebooks people would put linux on systems if you wanted it, so you might ask them and see what they say. I was looking at buying from them and got live, knowledgeable people quickly when I dialed their 800 number. Good luck
new notebook! Need help finding linux modem
