Thanks for the link, Zoid! This may do the trick for the layout I was trying for. :)

Edit: I'm getting this error when trying to ./configure the program.

    Hmm.

Previous version of CrunchBang was booting faster than Ubuntu. The latest 904 should boot even faster. Please confirm after your testing.

tint2 was very buggy last time I tried it, but I haven't tested the latest version. I've been using tint.

@pixelot: Just install 'pango', or whatever Ubuntu calls it. The arch PKGBUILD lists the following dependecies for tint2: glib2, libxinerama, pango, imlib2, cairo, and libx11. You should already have all of those except pango and maybe xinerama.

EDIT: For some reason the PKGBUILD feels the need to specify --sysconfdir=/etc.

I DID install pango and cairo. Actually, they were both already installed, but it still didn't work. I don't know why it didn't recognize them.

Is that something that would help my problem?

Try running ./configure --help and see if there's a way to point it directly to the necessary libs. Pango might be installed in a non-standard place.

I don't think it'll help your current issue, but otherwise I really have no idea.

Did you install libpango-dev and libcairo-dev? Just having them installed isn't enough to install the headers required to compile software linked against them.

I'm distro hopping (again) while Slackware 13 is in the works, but I'm liking CB 9.04.1 x64 really....I might try PCLOS gnome even though I have to jerk around with Xorg to get it up, but then it's fine...nice theme to that one too....CB boots in 17 secs...don't remember what's great on boot times

Anyways, Slackware 13 - will it have KDE 4.3?

I prefer QT to GTK - by far.
